Google Maps speedometer now rolled out for iPhone

That Southern Cape thing with speed changes is obscene. My daughter and I once counted heading west from where exit the nice toll road, to when enter highway at George that goes past airport = 53 speed changes.

Btw something else for managing speed : there is a prosecutorial guideline that they not prosecute speed infringements within 300m of a change in speed limit. that’s why you’ll often see the speed trap almost exactly 300m after the change in speed limit…

My Google Maps on iOS does have the toggle for showing speed limits, but I tend to use Waze because community flags things that are live and traffic flow / average travel times are live. Alphabet owns both Google Maps and Waze, not sure why they keep both going. Not sure Waze has offline map navigation like Google Maps has - which works brilliantly overseas without roaming or in areas like Kruger with bad/no mobile coverage.

I am on 6.126..3.76500 Maps and iOS 17.5.1 on iPhone 13 and have the speed limit.

But, my iCloud is Canadian, so maybe Apps differ based on your Region?

Out of interest, I changed my Region setting (of the phone, under Language & Region in Settings) to USA and then to Canada, but I still don’t have the speedometer.

My iCloud/App store have always been USA.

So still scratching my head why I don’t have it.

"Speed limit" or speedometer?
I have the speedometer but yet to have the speed limit show up anywhere, so have reverted to Waze.

Also, small hygiene issue which is a dealbreaker for me - Google Maps speedometer is only activated when I actually set a destination, whereas with Waze it's on all the time.

There's so much lag using google maps these days I may find myself having to resort to Apple Maps...

And that's a big deal because?

:)

1. I can just have Waze running in the background on my phone, or visible on CarPlay and will get a display of speed vs speed-limit on my CarPlay screen, and / or an audible beep when I go over the limit...
2. I don't always set a destination in my GPS, I just like having the map visible for speed cameras and other traffic hazards - Waze will give me all the relevant alerts, incl speed, even if I don't have an active destination
3. I'm fully embedded in the Discovery ecosystem, including Discovery insure, which incentivises me with vitality miles - through a telemetry device in the car - for good driving habits, incl not going over the speed-limit by more than 10km/h.

For all of the above, Waze is pretty indispensable > google maps

I tried Waze and it under reported my speed by at least 20km/h so I disabled that. The map isn't jittery like gmaps so I'll probably keep using it until gmaps is updated.

What did you use as the control to establish that Waze was incorrect?

My maps updated about two weeks ago. Its quite nice having the speed limit and actual speed next to it. Found out that my speedo us over reading by about 5kph.

I finally got the speedometer after another update (which was dated 30 Aug but only showed up to me yesterday)

Don’t have the speed limit option yet, so that will probably come with a future update.

I understand that rollouts are gradual, but still a little bit surprised that it took this long

Not here in SA.

Google maps is still so laggy for me it’s barely usable.
Google maps is all I use on my Se 2022 and it’s always worked flawlessly, same on the Se 2020 I had before that
