Google must stop trying to patent Public Domain Algorithm use

At EFF, we often criticize software patents that claim small variations on known techniques. These include a patent on updating software over the Internet, a patent on out-of-office email, and a patent on storing data in a database.

Now, Google is trying to patent the use of a known data compression algorithm - called asymmetric numeral systems(ANS) – for video compression. In one sense, this patent application is fairly typical.

It wouldn't surprise me if next thing that we hear is Google, Apple & M$ are going to be trying to patent the sound of their farts, and if you want to listen to them, then it's gonna cost ya. Those monoliths really believe that they own the planet and the painful fact is, to an extent, that's true.
