Google Nexus 4

Kind of expected, the Galaxy Nexus did horribly in SA, LG want to sell their product more (optimus g) rather than googles, so it makes sense from a business perspective.

Very exciting. I'm an iPhone fan, before I've been impressed with Nexus devices before, and ever since ICS Android has impressed me from a design perspective. 4.1 rivaled the iPhone in smoothness and added Google Now. But this takes the cake, 4.2 software has some nice enhancements over 4.1 which improve usability.

The hardware of the latest Nexus is most impressive, the high density IPS display I prefer to AMOLED, and it's got the same thin bonding technique as the iPhone 5, overall the design is great, it's extremely thin and tasteful. The price just seals the deal!

It is a bit lame that it doesn't have LTE. Interestingly the iPhone 5 gets better battery life on LTE compared to 3G/HSDPA (this used to be the other way around, progress!) thanks to the latest chipsets. So battery life can't be an excuse. Still I really don't mind, if I lived in USA I would, but HSDPA will suffice for the next year or two, in SA.

I would be very keen to get one...if only they had a 32G edition though, maybe will wait to see if it is announced like they did with the Nx7

Come on Mybroadband, put some heat on our carriers!!

We NEED to know:
- When will the Nexus 4 be available?
- What is the price? Then tell them to make is cheaper.
- Will it come in that Pimpin' Gold colour?

Thank you

Bad news for those wanting to get the Nexus 4, locally that is.

LG Electronics South Africa Hi Mayur, there are currently no plans to launch the Nexus 4 in South Africa based on the support of “Google Online” which links to the “Google Play” store. This is currently not supported in South Africa. Consumers locally have access to Games and applications via “Google play”, but not to all of the services such as “Google Books”, “Google Music” and “Google Online”.

Does not make sense to me, but what do I know. LOL!

Speaking of which, with the beautiful design, and lack of LTE, an SD card, and a removable battery, I'm starting to think this phone isn't for geeks, but for designers. I really like for my phones to be well made and beautiful, and this is right up my alley. Many of our commenters won't like it because of the spec sheet (it's insanely fast, by the way), but if you just want a premium feeling, stunning looking device that is still fast and functional, this is your dream phone. I feel like this is the first time Android has had a piece of hardware that matches the stock OS design philosophy. Some people won't care about that, but those that do will be absolutely in love.

I want this.

Of course it does. Since Google pegged the price at $299 for the 8gig and $349 for the 16 gig, we would pay (@ 1$ = R8.65), R2586 and R 3018, adding VAT,R2948 and R3441.5, so basically R3000 and R3500 respectfully. See the problem? They would be cutting out their entire market. The Optimus L9 has been announced at R4499. I'm assuming their worse off products like the Optimus L5 and Optimus L3 are probably in the R2000~R3500 bracket, so bringing out the Nexus 4 will decimate that entire market (which is obviously not selling anyway).

Got friends visiting from Germany in December. Really considering asking them to bring this one over for me.
Wanted the Iphone 5 initially but money wise this one is just too cheap to say no tbh.

+1

Mmmm. See that carphonewarehouse don't have the N4 on a sim free option.

Listings here.

Any other UK mobile shops that are?

I'm thinking that if I could get one there - have it shipped here with postbox-courier.com - should have it here for under R3.5k hopefully.

My heart is set on this phone. I am a Desire HD owner and my contract is up, looking for a new phone to buy/import

If you check out the verges review
http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/2/3589280/google-nexus-4-review
They love it sans the support for LTE which I can live with (The question of when LTE support in SA will be widespread is still not answered)

My Desire HD has treated me well but I've been so frustrated with the lack of update support, I really cannot justify having sense or touchwiz at the expense of having the latest version of Android.
The glass back concerns me, I would probably need to buy a cover of sorts if i decide to get this phone.

Many of my friends are hitting Europe on holiday :D perhaps I can get a phone deal in there.

OK now it makes sense ... thanks for the explanation :D

Except that LG has no local market. They haven't brought out a phone worth having for years.

Optimus G/L9 are top phones. LG has struggled in the mobile space worldwide, forget about South Africa. I mean Android is dominated by Samsung and then a far second goes to HTC. The same can be said for the worldwide market. At least LG are innovating in the TV space. Also LG supplies IPS displays to many many OEMs (from 4" to 27")

Been reading and watching The Verge's review of the Nexus 4 and very impressed.

The only thing that (still) cheeses me off immensely, is the 16GB storage limit. Why can't Google up it to 64GB? Or 128GB? :(

I know they're pushing for Cloud storage, but this is South Africa, where mobile internet is still insanely expensive.

Well for starters... the phone is not available for South Africa or other similar markets, so why would they make a phone for markets its not targeting?

PS: as a gamer I am with you. 5 to 10 top games and you have no space for anything else.
/me points to The Barts tale, clocking in at 3.7 gig

Wonder if Vodacom will not get it, cos they part of the Vodafone group?

They got the previous Nexus phones?
