Google Nexus 5

So, you want an Android device to perform an offline-sync with a Microsoft-owned desktop mail client? Not even Windows Phone does that.

Not the mail. Just the contacts, calendar, tasks are adequate. And that Microsoft owned desktop mail client just happens to be the market leading email software on the market leading desktop OS, so don't make it sound like its a niche thing

Samsung Kies does it, Sony software does it, Blackberry does it. My nexus 7 or nexus 4 doesn't.

I like my stock devices, but there is some value in some of the apps provided by other device manufacturers.

Or why not have the best of both worlds? :)

The Nexus 5 is exactly the same phone as the LG G2, albeit the budget version, and I reckon it won't be long before they have an official Android 4.4 ROM for the G2.

So, if you can live with LG's skin for a while, you might get rewarded with a pure Android experience in the end. ;)

I thought the same hence was looking at the G2 with added advantage of bigger battery n better camera, n when kit kat comes available it will be complete package.

Does LG updates takes a while or relatively quick?

I almost pulled the trigger on a G2 this morning, Vodacom was advertising it for R249 on contract, which is just insane.

But when I phoned them, they had no stock.

*Will have to read up on the LG community, only familiar with Samsung.

Bet you it is not gonna happen. Even the HTC One Play edition and Samsung S4 Play edition ROMs have not been released for the skinned phones - so why would LG be any different?

Exactly why I want a Nexus device (or an iPhone) - when the software maker releases a new version I want it as soon as possible!

Or worse - when LG releases the G3 I don't want to be left behind because I have last year's phone.

Don't get an iPhone...just don't...I have one now n 78% of the time I want to throw it in the ocean n never look back

Been using one for two years. Best phone I've ever had. Getting a Nexus 5 tomorrow or Monday so will see if I change my tune.

The point is, NOTHING does that, not even Microsoft's Windows Phone. It's not about it being a stock Android. The fact that you used proprietary software to cite your example indicates this. Just as Samsung has you download Kies- so too can you download a third-party application to perform the same task for a Nexus device.

And what app would that be?

Ok so I've just placed my order on the US play store...almost immediately afterwards I got an SMS saying I got charged for the transaction! I thought google only charge once the items shipped? Please clarify those that have ordered!

EDIT: I see the order is still pending on google wallet..can I assume that if the order does get cancelled, that I will get refunded?

I also got the sms 3-4days prior to shipping, but the transaction didn't reflect in my statement. The bank said it was pending, So they dont really deduct the money, they just "reserve" it until they ship. So if all goes well they should be shipping it in a few days time. BTW, there is a chance that they may cancel, happened to me before but in that instance the charge hadn't gone thru. So it look like you are safe.

To all the Nexus 5 owners, potential owners. I really enjoy the spell check function (i don't know if its a Kit Kat thing or stock google thing). Just like MS word, Firefox etc, if a word is not in the dictionary it will underline that word in red. Clicking that word then brings up options to correct it.

Eek ! no thanks, have used their stuff before, and it tends to work intermittently at best

It's a problem with Outlook, because of Microsoft's licensing costs that are associated with it. That, and Google not really being a fan of desktop-based clients.

Perhaps this would work.

They usually ship a week earlier than they promise. It will ship first week of Dec, probably.
