Google Nexus 5

Just a FYI for you guys:

Google Play Services 4.1 Begins Rollout With Location Reporting Battery Fix, Turn-Based Multiplayer, And More [Update: APK Download]
Posted by Liam Spradlin in Android OS, Downloads, Google, News

...

Perhaps most important to non-developers, Google appears to have "improved" battery life for users who have Location Reporting enabled. Readers may recall this was an issue with previous Play Services releases.

...

Download mirrors at the link. To early to tell if it improves battery life but yeah just a heads up :).

Hi guys. This may not necessarily be specific to the Nexus, but how on earth do I get rid of the warning message that I get when I increase my volume. The thing I driving me crazy. I mean how many times should a man be warned.

Change your DSP. I never get that warning using ViPER4Android.

I have just modified Gravity Box a little bit to slide down the quick settings bar. It was set at 15% of the width. I increased it to 30%. It was a request denied in C3C076 thread. Very chuffed with myself since I know absolutely nothing about programming

Could you please elaborate?

GravityBox --> Statusbar tweaks --> QuickSettings management --> Quick pulldown
This option lets you pull down the quicksettings when there are notifications in the pull down. It is set at 15% standard, but it felt like I had to pull down on the very edge of the screen to get to the Quicktiles. I liked how I could pull down on the left half of the notification bar for notifications and on the right for quicktiles on the Nexus 7. I asked if this can be increased to say 30% and was hit with a lot of resistance from the users. The dev was originally in favour of increasing it to 20%. But after all the others said they have small hands, he decided to leave it as is. So the dev said I can pull the git and adjust it myself ... which I did. Admittedly, 30% might be a bit wide - I might reduce it to 25%. This is all geared at one-handed operation. I do have the following settings also enabled:
- Swipe down with 2 fingers to pull down quicksettings
- Auto swipe down with one finger and get to quicksettings provided there are no notifications

Also, have a look at this - love it!!!!
It uses a bit more battery power, but not enough for me not to use it. I have not touched the power button in 2 days now.

Ah, I see! I have missed that feature, it did become useful. Will see if the 15% end up being too small for my needs.

Have used it before. Quite cool, if a bit buggy when I used it.

Pair this with the Around Sound app, and it makes for a pretty killer wireless music player...

Got a great offer for a Nexus 5, but before I go a head I need some advice on whether its worth the buy.
I currently have a S3 (CM10.2) and really love this device and am trying to find out what are the real big benefits of the N5, besides LTE?
*sidenote* I own a N7 (2013) running 4.4.2, so I am familiar with the OS differences.

Your responses are appreciated.

The biggest benefit is the price. You get a great looking cellphone that feels great in your hand at half the price of the others out there. Admittedly, I took a chance importing a phone which I never held or played with. The nett result is that I am happy as a pig in "that stuff". Also, when Google rolls out new firmware, the N5 is sure to get it. No begging [put any brand here like Samsung, Sony, etc] for firmware updates. I am not going to compare the N5 with the S3 as the N5 is newer and it would be a bit unfair. You might not be able to use LTE in SA depending on the network you are on - which I am fine with! Seeing the cost of mobile data and one glitch in auto-sync can cost you thousands and the networks will just shrug their shoulders. And besides, I really do not need LTE on a mobile device. Perhaps in a couple of year's time. Have a look on GSM Arena and search pro's and con's for the device. There are complaints about battery life, but this puppy gives me better battery life than I could manage on my S2 and believe me when I tell you. Last night I had a look before I started charging at 47% after 20hrs uptime - more than 3hrs screen on time, a couple of phone calls, regular sms/whatsapp, tapatalk and some browsing. Lightflow, pushbullet and gravity screen running all the time. I guess I could have gone 40 hrs with 6hrs screen on time with my mild usage.

Thanks for the response. The price is really tempting and having played with it for a few minutes I really do like the feel of it and the screen is awesome.
I am a bit of a mobile photographer/Instagrammer, so the camera is quite important, any comments on this front?

Head over to DPreview. I know they have done a review, but I don't know if it was updated after the 4.4.2 update.

Thanks will definitely check out now. Really appreciate the time to respond. :D

Also, check out the Anandtech review. Very in-detailed, balanced and informative. They are usually my first port of call when looking for reviews. Haven't had a chance to see Eric Griffin's impressions, but I usually watch those on Youtube (her video reviews are normally very in depth, the Nexus 5 one is close to an hour long). Here is the DPReview, uh, review.

OGroteKoning has pretty much covered the benefits of this device. Just to add on my end- the speed is insane, nothing comes close. It is also the most stable device that I have ever used, and I too have a Nexus 7 2013. As a mobile photographer, you will also appreciate the outstanding and excellently calibrated screen.

Previously, I hardly noticed the difference between 720p screens and 1080p screens, nevertheless the difference between the various 1080p panels out there (and I am a stickler for this). But with this device- it is leagues ahead of the panel on the S4 (a panel I am able to compare it to daily), in terms of colour reproduction, saturation, white balance and sharpness.

Also- while gimmicky at first, the wireless charging is a huge bonus, especially because it charges rather quickly. I have never had to spend more than two hours charging the device, even when down to less than five percent battery life.

Finally- standby time. Amazing. For the first time ever, I am not concerned as to what my battery life is before going to bed, in the worry that my phone may die during the course of the following day. I usually lose no more than two percent of battery life in standby time, over stretches of ten hours or more.

All in all- the best device that I have owned. You won't go wrong with your purchase, especially over the S3.

WOW. Thanks for the detail response.

Will check out Anandtech review and feedback on my decision.

Darnit Maggie!!!! I messed up somewhere.
When I receive an sms, all of a sudden my screen goes on. I have no idea how to stop this. It is the only notification that switches on my phone. I have the following customizing apps that might cause this, but I can not find the place where to fix it. PLEASE HELP!!
- Nova
- Lightflow
- GravityBox
- MissedIt
- Greenify

EDIT:
Found it - MissedIt had the "Wake up on notification" box ticked.

Glad that you found it. MissedIt would have been my first target...

Well I've just arrived in SA and I can't get my Vodacom sim working. No network apparently so emergency calls only.

Sim works fine in my iPhone 4 and the phone worked fine with my orange sim in Senegal.

I got it in the UK. Any ideas folks?

Hmm, oddly and thankfully everything is working OK this morning :wtf:

Popped the sim in to investigate but full bars and H+ (switched off LTE) so happy days :)

Weird. Maybe it just took really long for the network to pick the device up and send the APN settings. But some people have mentioned that they had issues on Vodacom with their N5's.
