Google Nexus 5

Stock, rooted with Xposed framework installed, and I am more than happy. I am following the progress of PA 4+, but more with a passing interest than anything else.

Lockscreen shortcuts- you could use WidgetLocker for that? And the GravityBox module for Xposed allows you to customise the quick settings toggles- it's what I have done.

Currently, I see no need at all for a custom ROM. I'll still go the custom kernel route, though.

+1 For what Maverick J says
... ^^This...
I looked for every excuse to flash another ROM because I am a flasher of note if ever there was one. But the stock kitkat and the Xposed modules make flashing a custom ROM redundant. The irony is that the N5 has a tonne of ROMs.

Wouldn't call it a crappy decision- unified storage really does have its perks.

Yeah... Android is Linux based. There's absolutely no reason to rip out external storage for the sake of "unification" with the ways you can mount storage. Google have publicly said that they did it to promote cloud storage. Which might be only slightly annoying in the first world, but in a country where you still pay per MB for your data (and pay a crapload I might add), it really limits your options. In the US/Europe for example, people stream stuff from their home Plex servers to their phones via the cell networks. That's just not practical here.

I love my phone but one disadvantage that I find is people asking me what phone it is. Off course I tell them "Nexus 5" and they give a look of bewilderment. Then I have to explain that its a Google phone. Which adds to further confusion because people think only apple and Samsung makes phone. I end up saying it is an LG.

I haven't experienced that funny yet. But the guy in the MTN shop almost fell out of his chair when I asked if they will ever bring in the Nexus 5. Most people don't ask for "unusual" phones and being a woman its a double whammy. I just smiled

It's not about the mounting of storage, it's just... easier. I don't have to worry about memory cards crapping out on me, on shifting around folders, of having to look through two different locations for files, etc. It also gives me a more conscientious approach as to what I put onto my phone, by definition.

Not saying that everyone like it, but I certainly do. I think a bigger issue is simply that the Nexus range has too small a storage pool, to begin with. If they offered a 64GB version (and dropped the 16GB size), it would be a considerably better option for those that need to have such a large amount of data loaded onto their phones.

And as you said- the issues stem more from the fact that we are not in a first world country to begin with. Can't blame Google for that one.

Personally, I would love it if they offered their tablets with storage figures of 32GB and upwards. I would happily pay extra for this. If Apple can offer iPad's of up to 128GB, why can't any Android vendor (especially Google)? It would kill this expandable storage complaint rather immediately.

What is this I hear that Google will scrap the Nexus. At first I thought these were baseless silly rumours but they seem to be gaining momentum.

No offense but that's one of the dumbest things ever posted on this forum. It's like saying all Ferraris should be limited to 60km/h because YOU love being limited. You can always just buy a car and drive it slowly just as you always have the option of not using a memory card if you find the effort of it so incredibly insurmountable. Us normal people would prefer a choice and not to be dictated to by some marketing department who makes the decisions about what we want or need, for us. If we wanted that we would have bought Apple.

No it wouldn't, because then you could have 128GB plus however big memory card you want to put in. I don't see how you can't get this.

Also laughed it off when I first heard about it. Lately though it seems like it's actually legit, apparently the Nexus line was just to create interest in Android and with 80% of the worldwide phone market I guess they succeeded. Lets be honest as well, the Nexus phone line is a really small fraction compared to Samsung, Sony etc etc

So the next move is to produce Google Play Editions of all the flagships...

Also with the news that Google and Samsung are starting to get cozy with each other in regards to software, it kind of adds to the whole story.

I have a colleague in the US is the biggest Android fan, used an iPhone and happily went over to the Galaxy Nexus and every Nexus since, runs Linux daily yet still bought the 16 GB N5. Why? Cloud storage! Google Music! Google+ photo backups! He told me he was actually fine with his 8GB N4.

He bought both the 16 GB and 32 GB and gave me the option - I took the 32 of course.

The days of manually managing storage is past (for the masses in first world countries at least).

And think about it - why would it be the marketing department who drops a feature? That statement by itself just doesn't make sense. If space was such an issue then why not just release a 8GB for cheaper and put an SD slot in it? I actually think most manufacturers realise that storage is less important these days with cloud storage and it is easier for most people if they just had a single space to store stuff they HAVE to store locally.

You do know Samsung I still pushing to get Tizen out, right? Yes, Tizen is going to take a couple of years to get to the level of Android, but still looks like a thread to me. If I were Google, I'd have kept the Nexus lineup to compete with the Tizen lineup.

LOl. You actually think Tizen will succeed. That is a dream that will never come to pass. Ask Microsoft and Blackberry how difficult it is to start an OS from the ground up so late in the game.

Except that Samsung is already the dominant smartphone seller in the world. Microsoft and BB werenot (at the time).

It would be interesting to note how many people buy a "Samsung Android Smartphone" or how many people buy a "Samsung smartphone"?

Samsung themselves would disagree with you...

Most consumers wouldn't know the difference, TBH...

Anyone know how long the current delivery time for the N5 in Australia is? Got family going there next week, I see the red one is available now.

Anyone know a free Australia vpn I can view the online ordering process with?

An opinion that doesn't subscribe to yours, does not make it "dumb". The fact that the vendor holds the same value in expandable storage as I do is enough for me- the whining for expandable storage is a rather dumb thing in itself, given that you do have the choice to purchase a device that offers expandable storage- devices for the normal folk, such as Samsung's line of devices. Nexus devices are not traditionally offered to normal folk, after all.

Well, Google won't offer this in their Nexus lines, and the overwhelming majority of complaints I have seen towards storage on the Nexus devices, is towards the capacity. Vendors like Samsung, most likely will. Nothing that needs to be gotten here, really.
