It is an app but I don't know if it runs as a standalone app. I had Exposed installed before I used Greenify.


EDIT: Oh, and if you want to use a great battery friendly kernel, try Franco kernel. I am running the latest v48 - came out yesterday and no issues for me yet

EDIT EDIT: Early reports suggest that this version is the most snappy and stable kernel Franco has produced in a while.

After about 3 months of using Franco's kernel (updating as he released new versions), I wiped my N5 clean by flashing Google's stock 4.4.2 image, reinstalled apps, and have since run the stock kernel. Battery life seems far better than under any of the Franco kernel versions. Obviously everyone has different usage patterns, and for some, Franco (or whatever) might work better, but this was quite an interesting finding for me.

From what I've read in forums and I'm sure OGroteKoning can confirm, great battery life can be achieved by tweaking the settings to match your usage accordingly. I'll be messing around with this on the weekend. Let's see what happens.

Interesting. I would like to see what your battery life is like. Yesterday I had 20% left - 5hrs30mins screen on time. Mostly on Wi-Fi and a lil bit on 3G when I went to vote. No calls and a lot of that silly addictive game 2048

Yes indeed. Something to remember that there are 3 major battery hogs - Screen on time (intensive games makes this worse because of computing power required), Voice calls and Signal strength.
My Setup:
Stock 4.4.2 with Franco kernel (no tweaks, but if I UV and chjange some settings, I think I will get about 45mins additional screen on time)
Mostly on Wi-Fi otherwise on 3G, but I am always connected.
I do not leave 3G connected (except when I forget to turn it off), I just switch it on when required. Network mode on auto for 2G/3G
Nothing updates automatically except App Sales, AppGratis, AdAway and SMS/WhatsApp
Bluetooth always off, but I use AutoBluetooth which switches BT on/off when I use my synced BT headset for phone calls
GPS always off except obviously when I need Maps/Waze or whatever other app requires GPS
Brightness always on Auto (Franco kernel manages this very well)
Auto-rotation locked
Haptic feedback only on with keyboard
NFC always off
Screen off after 1 min
Sync off
Greenify to stop apps not used from working
I have MissedIt, Gravity Screen and Lightflow running in the background
Some other stuff I can't think of right now
 
Franco kernel with the VomerTweaks init.d script is pretty good, too. I'll flash r48 when I get home, have been waiting a while for it.
 
Guys.

This morning, as I left my house, my phone failed to connect to mobile data. Only after rebooting and turning airplane mode on and off, did it finally connect.

Now again, as I'm leaving a wifi area, its failing to connect to mobile data. I had to reboot and toggle airplane again.

Anyone else experiencing this with stock rom?

There might be a setting in an app somewhere. What "controlling apps" have you installed?

Is it trying to connect to 2G or 3G?
 
I had weird data issues while the LTE was enabled, I changed it to 3G only and it's fine now.

Just go to Vodacom site, i think there's register function, then go to data bundles and LTE is in the list.
 
I've been a non-believer in LTE for some time, the main reason being that HSPA was more than capable but I have to admit that using LTE for a few days now and it is actually quite nice. The weird thing is that LTE speed seems on par with HSPA, I get 11mb down and 5mb up on LTE which I think is similar to what I was getting on HSPA. I'm not sure what the technical reason are but it seems like LTE has lower latency?

Could be a different segment of the network that is most likely operating under a lesser load, hence the reduced latency.

enjoy the lte guys

remember at the moment if you have LTE on, you could be missing some calls.theres a bug where your phone wont even ring to notify you,but it rings for the other person..i've disabled lte, till 4.4.3..hopefully its fixed then
 
Seems like it's easier to get onto LTE with Vodacom than with MTN. I had to go through a number of hoops and now have an LTE capable sim and the MTN system says LTE is switched on for me, but my signal refuses to show anything other than 3G/H. Ah well, I'm still getting speeds of up to 18mb down so I guess I can't really complain.
