Google now is now available on iOS. It's very powerful, but seeing as though its obviously not baked into the iOS, I question it's value on iPhones...

Thoughts?

I have an old Android device so I could never try it out, just saw all the hype around it.

Now that I have it on iOS, it can't live up to the hype. It works... not sure what more to say about it.

rumors are saying that soon it will be able to do functions (like setting reminders and setting alarm opening apps) on the phone like siri...

siri when comes to asking it something is worst thing I've experienced (all it says can i search the web for that? NO god damn it!) and done tests and google now is much better when comes to recognizing your voice... for Phone Functions yes Siri is fine but if google now is soon going to do functions for the Ios device... man! just screw Siri then.

but im pretty impressed about google now on Ios as it showed me how long took to drive to work and the integration on it is amazing. search and address, you can call them get directions simply just touching what you want. i find it very good :) and i am an Iphone 5 user and ill admit that google does have upper hand for now....

overall i love the app :)

Have you set the language on Siri to British English or Australian English? Mine was horrible on the American English version, changed it and now it works really well.

Haven't downloaded Now yet but I will do it soon.

ill set it and test over next few days

Google's been giving iOS awfully preferential treatment lately. Google Now is only currently available on pure Nexus devices. iOS has the best version of Maps and Now which 90% of Android phones don't even have. I would be very interested to see how their revenue streams break out across operating systems.

Are you an iOS user by any chance?

Strange I have Google Now on my Galaxy Note 2 as does my wife on her Galaxy Note.

Where on earth did you get 90% of Android Phones don't have Maps?

Sorry but your post is full of FAIL!

yeah im going to agree with you. had an sony x10 and i had maps... google now is for 4.2 devices as far as can remember.

moved to IOS like month ago so yeah. pretty sure i know what talking about on this one.

I am yeah, primarily.

Strange I have Google Now on my Galaxy Note 2 as does my wife on her Galaxy Note.
Yeah I was quite mistaken, sorry :o. It's non-Jelly Bean Android phones that don't have Now. So that's closer to the 75% mark.

I know ALL Android phones have Maps. I was saying that the iOS Maps is better. Well at least.. it looks better.

Apologies I was wrong about non-Nexus phones.
UGh I didn't want to start a debate on the matter though. It just struck me as interesting to note that Google is giving iOS almsot as much as they're giving Android.

ok nice so you say apple maps is better? new thread? i beg to differ - firstly google maps (Much bigger data base) secondly traffic is i would say this with confidence is much better on google maps. shows green and red etc i like that. not just little icons. and little doted lines. thridly ask Siri quick to take you home. (not sure if this is just me) i get told that it cant provide maps and directions in South Africa. i go into apple maps and wow thats maps in South Africa! whaaat? hahaha... google maps (sign in with account and set your home destination and work address") and when you search it is top search results so easy to find and it works great :)

note: my address of home and work is set in my profile for siri to take me home feature...

google maps also seems to work smoother for me.

but everyone has his/her own opinions when comes to these things. i might be doing something wrong with whole take me home feature. but oh well... Google rocks for me.

did anyone remember this is a google NOW thread? lol

Good grief, no, I said the Google Maps on iOS is better in some ways than the Google Maps on Android. I prefer Google Maps on iOS to Apple Maps atm because well...Apple Maps still pretty much sucks.

Interesting thing : I wanted to find Hood Avenue (it's in Hyde Park area)...and no matter how I pronounce it - google now couldn't recognise it :)

Is it possible that we South Africans can't pronounce word "Hood" :D

Otherwise, google now works - ok, but there is still space for improvements which I'm sure will happen all the time...

hahaha sorry i misunderstood... clearly :D slap me on my wrist

Gave it a try. Not bad, in fact it is on my home screen because there are definitly times when it will come in useful. However I noticed that in many areas I still prefer Siri. I asked Google Now if I needed an umbrella, it googled it and gave me a webpage. Siri pulled up the weather forecast. Also the total lack of personality is pretty bland. Next test is to see if it really does kill battery. Might give it a try tomorrow.

The biggest problem with Google Now, is Apple's closed system. On an Android device, Now is much more useful due to the application having deeper access into the OS. Where, with Apple - you're only allowed to access / integrate your App, to a certian level.

However, having said that - I believe there is a lot of room for improvement on Siri - if Apple put more effort into it, I think Google Now would be of little point to an iOS device..much like it is currently.

Have it installed, the search functionality for locations is quite cool.

Unfortunately google now requires that you are strongly invested in the google echo system...

After years of using google, I'm a bit over the crappy gmail interface (icloud mail just as crappy), difficulty in syncing contacts\ calendar entries with outlook and the lackluster effort they've put in with keeping google talk updated.

I'm no longer reliant on google services which does render google now pretty pointless.

Negative. It is available on Jellybean. I am running 4.1.2 on my s3 and it works on that...

Not played with Now on Apple yet. Only learned last night that it was available but in a restricted way. Will check it out on the iPad and compare.
I use it daily on my S4 - as I did on my S3 and then Note 2. Once you start using it, it becomes part of your daily routine.

I have been using Now since it became available for iOS about a week ago. I use Gmail and Google Calendar, as well as Google Maps on iOS. I have also been on Google Latitude for about 4 years. For some reason Google Now still can't figure out where I live and where I work. Somehow it's got the 2 mixed up, so when I am at work it's telling me I'm 26 minutes from work. This is weird, because my addresses for home and work are in Google Maps, but it's not really surprising because Latitude never figured it out either. (Google, I don't work at a cell phone tower!)

The cards Now shows for upcoming meetings are pretty poor, because very few of my Calendar appointments have exact locations in them. This is more a problem with Calendar than Now, but Google should have sorted this out first. If I set a dentist appointment it should pull my dentist's address from Google Contacts. Or it should remember where I went for my dentist appointment, and offer to pull that same address in the next time I set a dentist appointment. If I have a "Dinner" appointment, why doesn't Calendar have an "instant" lookup of local restaurants in the location field. These problems apply to Android as well as iOS.

It is sad that Google doesn't recognise many activities outside the US. Why no SuperRugby teams in the Sports cards?

The main difference between the Android and iOS versions of Now is that it doesn't push notifications in iOS. For some reason Google chose not to use the iOS notification system, so it requires the user to open the app to see the cards. This factor alone makes Now on iOS pretty useless, as it is the preemptive nature of Now that makes it useful.
