Google phones arive soon

If other Vodashops aren't offering this 'financed' deal it will be worth it for folks in other parts of the country to fly to Durban to get this deal. Amazing deal for a truly amazing phone.

It almost seems pointless to still call it a phone, since that's really a minor part of what it is. Search for "android wikitude" or "android sky map" to see some mind blowing things. There's even an app in the app store for when a song is playing on the radio and you want to know what it is: let the Magic hear it and it will tell you the song name and give you links to buy it!

Saw one last week. Wish it looked "sexier"
But quite an awesome phone!! Hope they market it properly, it will be useless in hands of the "average" phone users who justs sms and makes calls.

I was browsing some SE sites last week, it seems SE will also launch this OS in some handsets!!:)
 
Lol! Dude the feature where it tells you what song it is by recording a portion of the song is called TrackID its been available on Sony Ericsson phones for years...

Im hoping they improve apps far beyond what we currently have on Java. Even better than Apples iPhone apps!!!
I have no doubt they will but I wouldnt want the standard stuffs thats already available... weather, some music apps, footstep counters, etc is stale...

ok, so hows this for an app: wikitude: point the phone at the world around you and on screen through the camera you see overlaid wikipedia info tagged to objects in view (eg, that building, mountain etc), or Sky Map: show the phone the night sky and it labels all the stars where you're looking at. Want to know where Mars is? it'll give you directional arrows to point the way. How about the metal detector?

There are some really innovative things there ...
 
Personally the google phones I have seen look so dam ugly, and I honestly think it is going to take some time before they iron out the issues and actually grab a portion of the market. For me it is still "flimsy".
 
Wikitude would use the gps to locate landmarks. So would the star chart thing. Camera would not be involved i dont think.
 
Wikitude does use the camera with GPS, accelerometer and compass to know what you're looking at. It combines qype, wikipedia to identify objects in view and tag them. Pretty smart.

Sky Map doesn't use the camera.
 
@ archie: not sure. I'm just repeating what the sales person told me. It costs R185pm (+R80pm for the phone)

Listening to a vodacom spokesman on a podcast, it seems that you can get the Magic on pretty much any contract, you may have to pay in up to R2300 for the smaller contracts.

So, ask about what's best for you. I'm thinking of going for less talk time since I hardly make any calls, and more data. If I have to pay in thats fine
 
I just spoke to Nashua Moble and they said they are expecting stock for the Magic in the last week of June! Still a month to wait

Vodacom have not included the android market, which makes this phone very ordinary. Unless they make it available, get an iphone.

I just don't understand these people. Do they sit around thinking "How can we screw south africans?"

We don't even get the free apps like Google Sky Map. Thanks for nothing Vodacom
