Background : I’ve got many, many years of photos stored in Google Photos. Not only automatically uploaded photos from my phones, but also a number of uploaded (pre smartphone) photos.

1) Is there a way to transfer everything in Google Photos to iCloud (even paid) ?

2) I don’t want to cancel Google Photos yet - so is there a way to mirror everything iPhone / iCloud / Google Photos ?

No easy way I would imagine.

I suspect you would need to download your entire Google Photos library and re-upload it to icloud.

EDIT: I'd stick with Google photos as primary source though. I mean being cross platform has it's advantages, where iCloud is not, are you completely committed to the Apple ecosystem? With zero prospect of ever using Android/Windows again?
 
I see the to simply download a .zip from Google photos and upload to iCloud is easy enough. So, that's *mostly* sorted

I have the Apple One sub - so I get 200GB which I wouldn't mind using. Plus, on Apple TV when I go to the Photos and sorts nice little memories - which is pretty cool.

That's why I'm hoping to sync to both and get the best of both worlds
 
Seems albums created in Google Photos have basically 2 key presses and an option to 'download all'. But from the photos folder you'd have to manually select photos and download them..

There 2 ways to select photos, that I know of,

1.) individually 1 at a time (laborious)
2.) select a starting point, press and hold shift button and select an end point, works very well, to a point. I find if there 100's of photos between the start and end point it get's a bit flustered. Could just be my aging hardware though.

Reckon 2TB will be on the cards soon.
 
Yea I've been hitting (almost) 200GB on a daily basis .

I've just been cleaning up the duplicates, blurry & pointless videos to delay upgrading.

The jump is fairly large from 200GB >>> 2TB (Google Photos - haven't seen iCloud packages) ... not sure why not 500GB or even 1TB
 
One short coming of Google Photos is that it can't - to my knowledge - identify duplicate files.

Can iCloud?

i often get messages from google ( and ios) saying duplicate photos found

Ironic - just seen my first on iCloud ... but never seen on Google Photos. This album is actually from there, so I'd have expected

My brother changed about 2 years back he still prefers Google Photos . He reckons the AI and recognition is much better.

But as I say I’ll keep both for now & see what I feel. I’ve done a few albums already

:p for me, it's mostly because of inertia and I still have my main PC running Windows and I find Google Photos more convenient to use than icloud <--- could just be that I haven't explored icloud properly...maybe it's just as easy and convenient...
 
Hmm, I'm now going down this rabbit hole...

Might be worth the effort to switch everything since I see that icloud allows me to share the entire library with 5 people while Google Photo's only allows 1....

  • I went to iCloud.com and created 3 albums
  • I uploaded photos into the 3 new albums
  • I see them on the Apple TV if go to Photos > Albums
  • But I don't see them if I go to Photos > Albums on the iPhone
Must be a setting ?

Also, htf do you delete an album from iCloud on Windows?
