Perhaps a little bit manically optimistic. This is great news though because we can now use local accounts to access some of their services. With the new "uncapped" local bandwidth coming through on some ISP ADSL accounts this could be a very good bonus. Hopefully IS makes some good cash to from hosting the servers so it is foreign $$ coming in to the country. I get 4mb from pretty much every local site and only about 512kb from international so this will probably make a huge difference for me. It might also help to reduce the load on the SAT3 cable if we can hit local servers. Saying that it depends how they cache stuff because they would still have to pull it from overseas the first time you access it. I wonder if they pick up that you access your account from South Africa and then cache a reasonable amount of your data here?

Hmm this is good and bad ... maybe now we cn use google checkout with our bank cards :D but the downside will be alll the down time cus of IS lol

Noo!!! The moment they have a local office they are subject to local laws (or abuse thereof)

They can then be subpoenaed to provide access to nefarious entities for your search history and your emails.....

But, my nose is clean so yeah go Google go!!!

I only want them to do two things. Allow us to move our gmail local (so we can get it after we are capped) and fix google maps for SA.
That was one of the things that Stafford Massie said will drastically improve when Google has a South African POP up & running :).

Another benefit I can think of, is hosting of "local" .co.za etc domains with Google, via Google SA's POP, should also be possible...

I find it interesting that there is so much happiness about Google "going local". Yes, I agree it's a good thing, but there are alarm bells going off as well:

If Google is outsourcing their datacenter requirements to IS, it means that Google SA now suddenly has a single point of failure as well as a single point of entry. Speed to Google SA will no longer depend only on the speed of your internet connection, but also on the speed of your ISPs peering connection with IS.

And we all know what the peering situation is between Telkom (DSL) and IS.

Also, I suspect that the local presence will be limited to a start page and maybe some local topical news sites. All the search data, Gmail and back-end servers still sit in the US which now will have to be accessed via IS international links.

Google's search pages has always been lightweight and fast (and reachable via several different paths), so I am puzzled by the need for them to have local servers. Does anybody have more technical info?

Not blaming Google, but really think that before making promises one first needs to check if it is technically possible and/or feasible
