Google TV whitespace trial a success

Does ICASA even have any idea what is going on?

They themselves ICASA should be using the money they have to do experiments like this, If you calculate ICASA's income it is large for the number of staff members they have, so where is all that money going?

If memory serves me right in 2011/2012 Vodacom paid ICASA close to R40 odd million and Telkom 37 odd million now add Cell C + MTN + other ISP and you have a lot of money.....

I bet ICASA could not account for over half of it.

i also want to "trial" it. can move 10Gig a day at least......

Great to know the trial is a success!!! I hope this gets some notice and between the DoC and ICASA something actually gets done to allow some implementations of this beyond small, limited trials.

If the tech works well enough it would actually be nice to see the TV space bands be put in as public frequency bands like wifi 2.4 and 5.8 rather than lock it down to licenses. The only problem is I can see an issue if you can hack the system to not play fair with frequencies used...

Maybe they could at least open it up to educational institutions in the interim for a wider "trial".

imo the trial is more about proving the case for managed sharing and less about the TV bands - introducing another spectrum management tool which can be applied in other bands

hacking the system is always a possibility but not easy here given the requirement that the white space device check in with the database / linked device on a regular basis + in a few years there will also be a sensing component to this which will make it even more difficult. figuring out how to share is now the big issue for debate

icasa has an item on its strategic plan to have a framework in place by end March 2015 - probably optimistic but there is a lot of goodwill from both the DoC and the regulator

i think broader trials may well be on the cards
