Google type WiFi Mesh Network for Tshwane

Exactly. They only charge extreme amounts for internet becuase that is what telscum charges them...

If you connect to someone else in the wisp you can copy terrabytes for all they care (well I hope the network does not get too congested...)

Hrm.. 3GB seems a bit expensive if you ask me considering the access/last mile is suppose to free. I mean dsl 384kbps + 3GB (cybersmart) = R370. 2ndly why do they compare it for good pricing with commercial offerings when it is overpriced somewhat. Then again they don't say how isp's are providing internet access on this network.(isp backhaul..)

It might well be an initial spike in pricing to cover infrastructure. It would however be better for them to spread the recovery across a long period of time. It is however a good idea and if it is taken up widely it could change the face of internet access in SA.

Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees. They're doing the best with what they've got, and they've done well.

Neither does money! Their best compared to what? :( If it quacks like a duck, it must be a duck!

I could be wrong but the focus is not taking on the the other ISPs to get loads of customers but an added service. eg under the heading "Making the most of the network"

i think they just trying to cover costs and make some profit to keep the company going.

Our offices are located in the Centurion Lake area but I can't seem to pick up their SSID :(

I'm in the Eco PArk Estate in Higveld area and don't see their SSID as well

I think they only have dense coverage in Hatfield, in their "MetroMesh Zone"

Everywhere else will probably require external radios of some sort.

Why is everything happening in Tshwane? GTS' BPL, now this

Picked their SSID on Pretoria University Campus. Actually worked, telkom speedtest showed 67 Kbps downloads (basically what they promised). Managed to sign up and played around a bit. Very unreliable, though. Lost all activity every few minutes (Skype would disconnect and reconnect a minute later). Played around for about 30 minutes, then lost it all-together (can still see the SSID, but their dailer won't do anything)

When I drove home (live in Zwartkop, Centurion) I managed to pick up the SSID *some* places in John Voster drive (had laptop open next to me). Nothing at home, though.

:(

Wonder why Pretoria have all the goodies since they already had a metro wireless broadband project going......

Well making a big assumption(i know, i know) that bandwidth bought is about saix adsl cost.. then thats in the region of R140-160. So if the price was about R250 i've have said woah, its good and worth it. Somethng i am confused about tho is, can anyone just link up to it and be connected to thier wifi wan or man?

Nice thing is this.. when it prices come down to about R200 or so.. then its becomes cheaper than dial up(tho not bandwidth wise) for 3GB or so for an avg dial up user.

Btw there is no mention of speeds attainable for local access and international/internet links.

Now really. We're being milked. Substandard offering at exorbitant prices. :(

I just hope Roelf and his mates is using decent kit just like Google does from Tropos Networks and not their own hacked together Linksys WRT54G running white Russian DD-WRT in a weatherproof tupperware box :).

So where do you propose getting cheaper bandwidth from?
This is South Africa, and due to the current legal environment, the cost of Internet access is high. They cant charge less, if it costs them more.

After mind shift from providers. Economies of scale. Recovering investment over longer period.

So when we have unlimited GB at 24Mb/s at R200 per month how would that then be achieved? Because those days will come. :(

Many of you miss the point I think. This is primarily about providing the means for us public to do and develop what we want. A free to access network.
As with, "Build the hotels and they will come" follows "build the network and the content will appear"
YOU go provide content. File sharing, Free (local) gaming (providing people run servers), telephone and video chat, Run you own radio station/TV station and a whole bunch of things that nobody but YOU could ever develop or think of.

ditto

I don't think it could be said any better than this!

yup.. a free wireless man/wan is cool in that respect.

I think this is a step in the right direction, however ADSL still seems the better more value for money option (although still exceptionally expenisive)

Can it be value for money and expensive at the same time?
