Google Voice

Google’s ambitions appear to know no bounds. Last week, the US Internet giant launched a free telecommunications service, Google Voice, that could get network operators hot under the collar. I spoke to the man in charge of the project.

Man you have to give to Google. They are also planning on adding telecommunication satellites over Africa. All the pieces of the puzzle are slowly coming together to form the bigger picture.
The service is aimed at end consumers only, and will not be marketed to businesses. This may prove to be a smart move. It’s the same strategy that helped make Microsoft the success it is today: get consumers hooked and soon companies won’t be able to ignore you.
So true.

I love Google, it gets these telecoms companies out of their comfort zones. Can't wait for it to get to SA, God knows we need it.

it sounds promissing but time will tell in SA vs telkom

Now this is definately something that we need here. Just goes to show that these corporates can do more, but chooses to rather kill the market.

Grandcentral is a great idea, but it still has bugs that must be sorted out.

For example, your mobile only starts to ring after the fourth ring that the caller hears, and by then most of them already accepted that you are unavailable and terminates the call.

I can't believe nobody is worried about their privacy. They are probably recording all calls!!

Then there’s the voicemail service. Google says it can convert voicemail into text.
They wouldn't have made this service available if they couldn't convert voice to text. Otherwise the data would not be of any use to them.

Having said that though, I will still use the service when it becomes available in SA.

EDIT: oops, didn't see the pinky-and-the-brain comment. now that silly song is stuck in my head!

One to many sci-fi movies.

This is truly fantastic. I always said Google will take over the world. Its like the Umbrella Corporation. Bioengineering next. Hell for all we know they already have a finger in it somehow - as usual they won't tell unless absolutely the last minute. WD to the Google engineers.

Maybe so - but have you tried it out as GoogleVoice?
Anyone out there is the US with feedback?

apparently it will only be available in the US :-(

No it's not apparent, its fact ;) :p :D

Free internet and calls - damn those 1st world countries!

I am withdrawing from the Google matrix. No more Adsense on my sites. No more Analytics on my sites either.

That company is already too powerful. We don't need them to become more powerful. The US Govt. needs to put a spoke in their wheels before it is too late.
