so I want to get a GoPro, primarily for scuba diving. The GoPro HD 2 is generally priced at around R3600. A camera enclosure for my camera (Sony point&shoot) will cost around R2500 which is more than the camera.
So the GoPro seems like a decent buy.
I see the HD3 is due out soon (everywhere says end-November).
Has anyone got the HD3? What do I get for the extra cost other than wifi connectivity?

EDIT: And who has the best price at the moment?

Get a 3... with the 2 you would need to buy the diving lens housing and a wifi backpak to get the same funtionality as the 3. The 3 is also lighter and is basically double as powerful.

'double as powerful' says nothing in the context of photographic/video equipment.

And op, know that there are many people that have issues with the Hero 2 not wanting to turn on after being connected to a PC, which ends up requiring they open up the case and remove its battery completely, among other things to try and get it working again. This is an issue that, to my knowledge, has still not been acknowledged by GoPro, and that might even still exist in the Hero 3.

I'll be buying a 3..

What I don't exactly understand is the difference between the "white", "silver" and "black" versions.. White starts at R3k, black at R5k..

Probably specs, but I can't find out exactly what all is included in the black over the white..

NVM - found it here - considering the "Silver" one.

Go to the gopro website... I think the white is basically a hero 2 but lighter. the black does higher framerate and resolution video.

At the risk of a wall of text... double as powerful does actually mean something...

Hero2 : 720P @ 60 frames Hero3 : 720P @ 120 frames
Hero2 : 1080P @ 30 frames Hero3 :1080P @ 60 frames
the black can take 4k video, the Hero2 could only do 1080.

Pretty much the definition of double as powerful.

I now see, the "Black edition" has better video capturing etc, it's a beter camera than the "Silver" but only costs R1000 more. The black includes the wireless remote and the "silver" not. The remote is R1000 on its own, so I can't see any reason in not buying the black striaght away.

good choice.

Ahh glad I saw this post as I am also in the market to buy one. I knew that the GoPro3 was on its way so I did not buy the GoPro2.

Anyone know of a place cheaper than www.actioncameras.co.za? Or maybe best choice where to import it from?

Be advised you need some sort of lens adapter for the gopro to use it underwater properly...

I thought that this was only an issue on the GoPro HD, not the HD2 or 3?

Wifi yes, diving lens housing surely not. It comes with a case that is waterproof to 60m

jprheeder who is a user on this forum ordered one from the official gopro site in the states, perhaps find out from him how much he paid in the end.. I remember it being about 4k with shipping... but excluding duties and vat.

Read that page I posted. People are saying that GoPro says that just because the case is waterproof to 60m doesn't mean it's an underwater camera.

The diving housing lens was fine for above water shots, so it made sense that they put that as standard and drop the other lens.

The HERO3's reduced-distortion, 6-element aspherical lens combines with user-selectable Ultra-wide, Medium and Narrow field-of-views to deliver more perspective-capture options than ever before. Add the totally updated flat-lens waterproof housing that delivers stunning image sharpness both above and below water and you've got one of the most powerful and durable image capture solutions on the planet.

I'm about to sell my GoPro2 - with dive housing, and hard carry case for two housings and the extra's...

I wouldn't recommend the GoPro for photo's underwater, but for video its pretty good.

So if I specifically want photos, I should rather get a housing for my regular digital camera?

Hi Guys,

I preordered the Hero3 Black Edition from the online store earlier this month, it's actually just landed in JHB today so I am just waiting for an invoice for the VAT levy. Should get it by Friday.

This is what I have paid so far:

ORDER SUMMARY
Quantity Item Name Price Amount
1 HD HERO3 Black Surf (Todos) 399.99 399.99
1 Chest Mount Harness 39.99 39.99
1 Battery BacPac II 49.99 49.99
1 GoPro 6 Pack Sticker Pack 0.00 0.00
Tax: 0.00 $
Shipping & Handling: 105.00 $
Total: 594.97 $

Apparently the levy is going to be about a grand. :wtf: so with all that factored in, it may be cheaper to get it here in ZA.

Although, I did query what the cutoff point was for your item to be vat exempt and the guys at Customs said that if your order is > R4k then you wont have to pay VAT. So If you plan on buying the Hero3 Black (which you really should be as the others are not worth the difference in price) you cannot get around the VAT as they add the Shipping fee which tips you over the 4k mark.
If you are buying the silver/white edition however, you prob will score with the VAT exemption.

TL; DR:

Black = R4478.79 + Levy(will get that amount today but expecting about R1K)
Silver = R3591.33 + No levy as it is under R4k
White = R2705.01 + No levy as it is under R4k

Not worth buying online IMO. Hope this helps.
