GoSolr vs Solar

What I did learn though, is that solar is not as expensive as I thought .

I've always thought even a small system you'd be looking at R120k+ and that was really your entry point.

Someone gave a WebAfrica deal which is also about R60,000, so it seems that you can get started for that price.
Morning @Dolby thanks for the mention - for anyone who would like to check our solar options, please visit this link for all required details: https://www.webafrica.co.za/hardware/solar-power-kit/
You're more than welcome to reach out to us via DM for any help. Rs^

Just an update :

I checked online and quite happy with the price I got . I could be wrong, but the equipment is about R80,000 and the install/CoC should (hopefully) be around R12,000-R15,000.

So about R30,000 saving in total

Easysolar II GX (48/3000/35)
R35,000.00
Polytech 2.4KW LifePO Battery
R18,000.00
600V Protection Box 2 Inputs 2 Outputs 16A Isolator Type II SPD
R6,500.00
4 x 375w Panel
R12,000.00
Fuses, cables, isolators, brackets, trunking etc
R8,500.00

Either my OCD or squint but a level is needed here :D
Don't you DARE say that .

I had someone mount my TV once and they were a few mm out and that's all I saw . I had to get someone to remount because I had a dose of OCD too

These look straight when I look - but now I'm going to wonder :/

@Dolby I dunno if I would say forced. The onus is basically on you, if its not insured and its damaged or stolen, you are still liable for the kit. Same with a rental car etc. Also same if you owned it, you would still want to insure it. And they don't force their insurance, its between you and your HOC so as others have said, R50 odd or depending.

And yes, you shift your expenditure to them but you avoid the rampant escalation of eskom as well as any maintenace costs or issues. I spoke to a couple of the sparkies who came for the installation, some people have ridiculous expectations of what solar can do for them. One chap apparently tried to run a coffee shop with 8 machines and wondered why his 5KVA inverter refused.

For comparison sure, keep them in mind but then also add it to the R60k one as well, its no different. To me its part of the whole solar shift but I don't see it as part of the equation of rental vs purchase.

Also when you apply there is quite a detailed process and they advise you of the local bylaws and restrictions once you pinpoint your home.
I think he means with rental you are forced to insure. With owning its up to you.

Well depends. If its financed as a asset, pretty sure they will insist too. If its unsecured lending then its the same as cash so yeah but to be honest not insuring, especially at the minimal cost of addition to a HOC policy, is rather daft.

No, I'm not saying Dolby is, just a statement in general to have such an expensive asset not insured, never mind theft but for fire and other losses.

Agreed.
Though when I financed my car they checked up every year and had to evaluate the insurance. This could result in them choosing an insurer they "approve".

Ok, so an issue … and these guys appear to only have time to come back on the weekend.

The last two days - since they’ve left - I’m using triple the power to what I usually do with my meter reporting 60+ units per day used.

Everything seems to be exactly the exactly the same as it’s been for 13 years. Before I confront them - is it possible to use power without a load ?

Short circuit and loop or something ? They haven’t installed - but they have prepped . I have no idea what that means exactly … but just want to see if possible.

That’s over R1k power in a week while I wait for them

Is it hooked up and on? Also go around the house and trip things and see if it stops the units running.

Nope!

I didn’t follow the install , but they have played in DB … I see a cable coming out of it (not connected though) … and I see both Stove and geyser switches are taped up.

That’s the prep that I see

If it's not on and it's not connected, I don't see how it would be the issue. Best bet is to switch everything off one at a time and see. Even do it at the main board

You sure they didnt connect up the battery some how and its charging?

Thanks.

Nothing connected ... it could be an Eskom issue or anomality that (coincidentally) timed up with them touching the DB board ? I chatted to my stepdad now and he said the same thing about he can't see an issue if nothing is connected. But timing is just odd - they touch Saturday and then both Sunday / Money are record high power use figures

I live in a tiny 2 bedroom - no pool / pond / borehole - with an average use of 20-25 units, of which my geyser is typically 8 .
When my helper comes, this would go up to 30-35 units with vacuum / washing etc

60-65 for a tiny place is insane.

Thanks.

20 in a tiny place is insane :-), I was doing 20 to 25 in my 4 bedroom house + pool, now with the solar it's like 8.

20 in a tiny place is insane :)
Single at the time though ?

I've kept a record of units used (I'm OCD sometimes) and it seems my monthly average when I was single was 386 (including winter) - so 12 per day
