Got a call.....

I think it's wishful thinking for a 384 speed upgrade, as firstly Telkom just brought the line rental price down by quite a bit (yes, I know still not nearly enough though) and would use a speed bump as their solution for their next (forced?) price cut.

Just my two cents ;)

So when Telkom want to bump you up to a high speed line you have to pay the normal ammount for that line or do you get it at a discounted price?

Also broadband is considered a line that does a constant 1Mb/s isnt it?

I'm more than happy with 384 kbps on the Do2 package, torrents download at about 30KB/s, so no complaints from me. If only they would increase the cap instead of the speed!

Under current legislation it is a minimum downloads speed of 256kbs.

I think 384, 512 and 1024 should be 1Mb, 2Mb and 4Mb respectively.

Sub-1Mb speeds in this day and age is just not on.
Well ICASA isnt know for aiming high - or having any sort of tangible success for that matter. :o

Plus - a lot of people probably couldnt get those high speeds even if they wanted to.

My mind baffles at why. It's like they're holding us back on purpose.

Small tip, which I read on this very forum, for anyone for future reference,

After switching my router off for a few minutes, I switched it back on. The PPPoE connection was connected, but I couldn't access any sites.

Now, the main problem is people don't know about it, so they just resort to phoning telkom. I bet you that about 30% of the folks on 1024 which can't sync @ 4096 phoned telkom to say the line doesn't work.

The workaround:
Set your router in Bridge mode (not half bridge), create a PPPOE connection in Windows and enter your ISP information, try to connect a few times, even if it fails, be patient. Now, enter the telkom guest account details: Username:guest@telkomsa Password:guest

Try and connect again, it should connect after a few retries. Disconnect again and enter your ISP details, now connect.

If you've successfully connected to a PPPOE connection in Windows, you can set your router to connect via your ISP details again.

The problem is most people phone telkom and complain that they can't access the internet, so telkom reduces the line speed and then you think the line can't sync at that speed :p ;) :D

My small print which I forgot to mention, we're on a business DSL package ;)

Can anyone say Anti-Competitive...?

Isn't it just because they would convert it to a DO Broadband type package, which you could also do on other ISP's, but the line alone from Telkom always costs you more.

They just can't offer to bind your current ISP account and the new line.. but then of course offering to do it for TelkomISP and making no mention of other ISP's similar offerings makes it normal Telkom practise.
