As some of you may know, I dropped my MacBook, which resulted in the LCD back-light dying. Well, unfortunately they had to replace the whole panel, which cost me £270 - R3556 at today's exchange rate. They replaced the keyboard too, under warranty.

The amusing thing is, this cost me less at Apple than the quotes I got for pirate parts

Next time don't drop it!! :p

Heavy costs that - if it was a Win Laptop it would have been better to replace it.

It's always a good idea to replace a win laptop . . . with a Mac. :)

Yeah, what bwana says. Its always best to drop the over priced hardware instead of the normally priced hardware :P

Actually, *I* didn't really drop it. I just forgot to zip up my backpack - gravity made it fall :)

You'd be surprised. The parts and labour on this job was cheaper than on my old HP (which broke several times all by itself).

Insurance, that's what it's there for.
Maybe you could even score a new MB Pro.

Or to just move away from mac having learnt your lesson :D
Wow talk about overpriced!

Sucks to be me - I was quoted over R10k for a replacement LCD and labour on a MBP.

Definitely get a second or even third quote, i know most of those lcd's including the whole assembly is around 7k, labour should only be 1 hour. Still pricey, but better than 10k

Have a look at this. They show the display (which in their case is the lid, with all the internals, including the webcam) for $999. Now, this is where I looked before I took my MacBook in. Apple's parts turned out to be cheaper.

I would recommend phoning Apple either in the US or UK, tell them that you consider sending your MBP over for repair, and you need an estimate of the parts & labour, based on the diagnosis that Core has done already. They should be able to give you an idea.

Got two quotes one from Project 3 (i think that's what they call themselves) and one from a forum member - both were over R10k.
The issue is a small one so I suppose I'll live with it until my next notebook whatever that will be.
@koffie: thats not so bad if were talking the entire top portion of the machine.
I have been on the lookout in the classifieds etc. for someone who has dumped a beer on their MBP and fried everything from the screen down but nothing as yet...
@rocketboy: fair point - a buddy of mine just dropped his Dell and the screen replacement was R2k plus labour.

uh.. $1000 translated into Rands is =- 11k? then still transport costs? is labour included?
how is this cheaper than getting it fixed locally?

Read the last sentence of my first paragraph again:

How much cheaper it would be, if at all, for the MBP, I couldn't say. That's why I said phone Apple in the US or UK (or both) and find out.

ah sorry man, i jumped in a little quick. But i expect at the moment you would suffer with the exchange rate, if there is a chance a local supplier has stock of it, it might turn out cheaper. Like i said 7-8k!

Why don't you ask Cybermoo? If it's not under warranty any more, and you're willing/able to crack it open yourself (www.macfixit.com has guides for everything), it might work out cheaper.

FYI, cybermoo no longer works in the apple industry. Although i am sure u will still see him around :)
