The Department of Public Enterprises is planning to set up a third national telecommunications provider to roll-out broadband nationally, that will include the assets of Eskom and national signal distributor Sentech, sources say.

Should the department's plan come to pass, the country will effectively have three telecommunications companies with government having a controlling stake in the incumbent Telkom, an indirect stake of about 30% in the second national operator (SNO) and will own 74% of the third player once it is formed sometime later this year.

Typical......just gotta have a stake in each one.......this country is screwed.

“Essentially we have become frustrated by the slow pace at which Telkom is rolling out broadband and the pace of the SNO,” one of her senior aids said at the time.

Only now....we have been fustrated from day 1!!!!

One thing this government is good at: making plans which come to nothing. And if they do come to anything why bother in the first place - witness the cell company duopoly/monopoly debacle. Instead of regulating - and actually DOING something.

Vodacom (through Telkom)

The SNO
The TNO

Bloody ridiculous. And TATA will have a share in the TNO - which would be a COMPETITOR to the SNO!?

There seems to be people in positions of power taking drugs. None of this makes sense anymore. The only thing that makes sense is that Government knows they can make a fortune out of Telecommunications by not doing much, something they are quite adept at.

if they do this then govt can save itself money and save everyone else from frustration by simply closing ICASA
