Cape Town - Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs Dirk du Toit promised MPs on Wednesday that the government will take land away from farmers who unjustifiably evict people from their farms.

Answering a question in National Assembly the deputy minister told David Dlali of the ANC that the government now intends to use existing legislation to tackle what he called "this medieval practice which is allowed to continue and continue", by expropriation.

The law he intends to use is the Provision of Land and Assistance Act of 1993, which was amended in 1998. The act says that agricultural land may be used for settlement if the minister decides it can.

But a key clause in it says: "The minister may for the purposes of this act, exercise equivalent powers to the powers that such other minister may exercise under the Expropriation Act, 1975."

That is he can force the owner to sell - for a reasonable price.

Du Toit told the house that the usual answer to a question about evictions was that the government will use the Extension of Security of Tenure Act, and the Land Reform (Labour Tenants) Act, to try to prevent evictions.

"Now I can tell you we intend to use these three pieces of legislation," he said.

"Once we start to take their land the evictions will stop in mid-air".

And he added to applause from the government benches: "We are not just going to take them to court. We are going to take their land."

Would be very interested to hear what the ministers interpretation is of a 'justifiable eviction' then, or does such an act not exist?
 
Not misleading, it means you either allow a person to stay on your land for 10 years, so they can take the property as their own, even if they are unwelcome useless employees OR remove them and risk having your land appropriated. All farms or part of farms will be handed over in 10 years from now.

Now if I lose my land to such practices, I just might take the law in my own hands because of the way the ANC abuses it.

If I was a farmer, I would make the employees pay rent, a huge amount, barely legal though I will pay them a "benefit" to ensure any employee I fire will vacant the premises within 10 years.

Let me just say, the ANC is digging their own downfall. They can cling to power forever, because someday nobody would want the hole this country will become anyway. If there was any doubt in my mind if RSA presented a viable investment, if there was doubt if I should leave, it has become clear to me this past month, leave RSA now.

The objective of the minister of agriculture should be to promote agriculture, instead her main objective is to get rid of white farmers, well **** that. I'm so gatvol these days.

Zuma is accused of rape, preaches about morals to us.
Manto steals, but is put in a position of trust, which she abuses to get a transplant, to fix problems created by alcoholism.
The minister is threatening to expropriate land.
People recommend that foreigners should not be able to own land in RSA and that land ownerships should be classified according to race.

Well the list can go on and on, but people on this forum will continue to defend the ANC even if its actions are despicable abuses of human rights. The NP under a different name is still the NP, which is called the ANC now.

Welcome to Zimbabwe no.2!! I guess the signs were there. The thing that upsets me most is that it is an Afrikaans white bastard that fights the hardest to take farms from his own people - "hans-khaki!"
 
Brother had a problem with his foreman. Guy was drinking on the job, fighting with the other workers. Got fired in the end. Problem solved? No. Guy is still on the farm, living with his mother. So still giving problems and preventing the other workers to actually work. Nothing to do lawfully about it.

Bought land, and started building houses for the workers, so that they don't have to live on the farm. Hoping that they move there willingly. The housing is provided free of charge AFAIK.
 
does the government know abt History and not repeating it...

What did they do to the white farmers in Zim.. kicked them out.. What happened.. Zim went into a hectic downward spiral... you think they would notice these things.

Im getting worried about this country.. i still have to study here for another 6 years.. hopefully it doesn't go down the tubes.

I rate we pay some Homeless ppl to go put up shacks at Mp's houses.. and then say they can't evict them.. thats not right.
 
I get the feeling that Mugabe (and supporters), think that their economic problems is worth the effort to get rid of their European heritage. Whether our government have the same thinking, only time will tell.
