Before this get out of hand:
1) Tahir Ally, if I read his posts correctly, is an independent service provider (i.e. he resells Vodacom contracts, mobiles, etc.) and cannot and does not speak on behalf of Vodacom.
He does offer valuable info from the SP's perspective, for example when what handsets will be available at what price.
2) I've not seen a statement that the *whole* of Gauteng will have 3G coverage soon and believe it to be factually wrong, at least in 2005.
By then end of the year there should be approximately half the number of 3G base stations than the current 2G network, obviously with concentration in the more relevant areas.
Gauteng, being relatively small with a higher population density will, logically, have better coverage than, say, the Northern Cape.

Thank you for clarifying this. I did not want forumites to be misled by wild and inaccurate claims which would be repudiated by the fine prints in their contracts.

When I started opening this forum now, i started my DU METER STOPWATCH - these are the stats - just to open this page and write this reply:
11 min 32 sec ( say 8 min to compensate for the typing time )
Total data downloaded 130.6 kb and uploaded 106.1kb
maximum download speed 40.8kbps and max download 22.0Kbps
average download speed 1.3 kbps and upload 1.0Kbps
I was watching the meter- it just touched the 40.8Kbps for hardly a moment. Most of the time it was changing between 0.4 Kbps,0.9Kbps, 1.6Kbps,2.4Kbps,10.3Kbps,11.5Kbps and 22.9 Kbps
For interest sake, ill disconnect and then use MTN, using a Siemens ME45 ( Non EDGE, old phone ) and access the same page and type the stats again here so we can compare.

VODACOM 3G do more MAGIC!!
Vodacom 3G: If u had anything to do with 3G activation in KDP, i need another urgent switch on - think u can help?
There is a place close to Krugersdorp, which has alot of guys waiting for Broadband access - cheap access = VODACOM 3G.....if u do a switch on u will get mega gigabytes of activity = REVENUE.
See if u can organize something fast..

Worked well uptill yesterday.
Since yesterday ( about 5:15pm ) : No 3g!!!!!!!!!
I called 155 and they came back with a reply now that this is not a LIVE 3g CELL ! ( cell ID is Krugersdorp-2 / 1/ 3 )
Their explanation: The 3g cell part of the tower belongs to Siemens and Siemens were working on it ( SINCE 7th JUNE??????) and now Siemens have locked it down......and it will only be unlocked when Siemens hands it over to Vodacom after it is certified or something like that.............
WHAT IS GOING ON?????????????????????
It worked for almost 2 months and now NOTHING!!!
And back to the rubbish GPRS speeds....and i thought ill be finishing my bundle up for this month with downloads...but at GPRS speeds i can forget using my bundle.....so I LOOSE because no mb get carried over..............
PLEASE TELL ME THAT 155 made a mistake and 3g is just off for the day!

I have been enjoying 3G in Vanderbijlpark since around the same time Krugersdorp went 3G live. Friday night I was still streaming sat photo's on Google Earth and Saturday morning the 3G signal was gone! I have been on the phone with Vodacom since Monday morning early. First they said the CBD 3G BS is running. This afternoon I drove to within 200 m of the BS and booted my Laptop with no 3G signal with an external antenna. Phoned Vodacom right then and there in the car and they told me the same story about Siemens and lock down blah blah blah...
well i'm back on GPRS and according to Vodacom it could take up to a month to get the red tape out of the way!
Just for the record, I'm 4.2 km from the CBD 3G BS and was running on 1 bar signal with avg 250 kbps download speeds. Didn't think 3G cells are that big...guess I was also the only user so cell breathing did not take place.

They way I understand the whole process: Siemens is contracted to upgrade a BS to 3G, they install the necessary hardware, commission it and do tests. Once they are happy with the installation, they switch it off and hand it over to Vodacom. Vodacom then have to ensure that the local area paperwork is in order: council permission etc. Once Vodacom has all the documentation in place they will switch the tower back on and publish the "3G Enabled" cell broadcast to the users.

Firstly, turning on sites for nearly two months and then switching them off again is just not on. It's a bit like getting your first hit for free....
The actual process is as follows:
All the various base stations must work in unison, not interfering with each other, be able to hand over, etc.
The network is therefore divided into 'clusters' of base stations and a cluster must be optimized as a whole.
So once a new base station is built, it's turned on (for a few hours), commissioned and then turned off.
Once all the base stations in the cluster are ready, they're optimized as a group and once this is completed, the whole batch is turned on.
If this process is not followed, the people in the new area will get coverage but probably at the expense of everyone in adjacent cells.
In this case it seems the 'few hours' extended into a few weeks.
I'm waiting on news when they'll be up again. Will revert soonest.

Funny, if i go outside, i get some other base stations 3g coverage! which means that the whole CBD is not switched off??? only, my luck, that the BS i use for 3g is off???
im really looking fwd 2 ur feedbackas to when it will be LIVE again > trust that youll organize it ON again by today
