Garmin has weekly updateable speed traps (by the community).

Does tom-tom have recent speedtrap data?

I have the Nuvi 775T and TomTom 7 on my pocket PC.

I find the TomTom South African maps to be more accurate and the TT can be configured for personal preferences, and it's far easier to customise routes , very easy to elect not to use a specific road on the route etc.

In the US the traffic avoidance works great on the Nuvi 775T, but if I was buying another standalone GPS it would be a TT.

If you're still considering, Makro has a special running on the TomTom ONE (XL, I think) for R1399. I bought one on Tuesday. Extremely accurate in the JHB region. I don't need all the unnecessary features of Garmin, like Bluetooth. The TomTom has got accurate maps and the map updates are free. Wealth of info on Points of Interest and public services in your area as well.

Cellphone with GarminXT FTW! No need for superfluous stand-alone GPSs

By the time you have paid for GarminXT and the mapsets plus purchased a holder and car charger you are just about at the price of a standalone unit. Considering the fact that I have yet to test a cellphone which is as reliable and quick as a dedicated unit I still think a dedicated unit is currently the better option. GarminXT on a cellphone is however a nice backup.

All in one devices have their drawbacks.

Agreed on the cost-side of things, but then that's a subjective thing. I prefer having fewer gadgets able to do more things. Laptop wit Bluray, Leatherman instead of just a pocketknife, WinMo phone etc.

The only aspect where phones lag behind a bit these days is in terms of the time taken to lock onto the satellites. For the rest it runs the same basic software with the same mapsets as standalone units.

But, as alluded to, it's not the ideal solution for everyone.

Agreed with both. I personally opted for the stand-alone GPS unit. I have yet to see a GPS-enabled phone cope with navigating the driver (with voice prompts) as well as handling a call on a hands-free kit. I have a Touch Diamond handy as well, but explicitly decided against it.

Sorry you don't live near me...I've been trying to find someone who could work the GPS on my Nokia since I got it!! It worked once, but is so bloody complicated when compared with a Nuvi, that I prefer to get lost with my Nuvi!

well the Mapshare updates are free, but map updates/new maps have an associated cost...just to be picky...:D

OKay, so I got myself the Garmin Nuvi 1300 today.

And I must say, I am very impressed. Nice big wide screen, easy to use, works like a charm.
Thanks for all the inputs guys, I appreciate it! ;)
