GPU Value Comparisons

Awesome!!

I was afraid that special will not last, cause I saved up for the hopes of buying some specials at rAge in a week!
Thank you Lord Nikon6 for the help!!:D

cool, let us know what you think once you have it running :)

I need some advice here - What would be the best graphics card for around R2000, maybe a little more? It's going into a slightly older machine that is currently running an ATI HD4870

Edit* will I have any problems putting a newer card into an older machine?

what version is the pci-e slot? If it is 2.0 you will be fine with a new card.

From what I can tell the ATI 7850-7870 seems to be the best bang for buck. Esquire has an MSI 7850 for +-2500. Is MSI any good?

the 4000 range cards are very old? You can get a 7870 for 2500. Msi cards are good cards from what I have heard.

Don't think they'll have stock of the 4000 series. It's more than 3 years old. Like Lord Nikon6 said, get a 7870 for that price. And yes, MSI has excellent cards! My choice of brand if there is no extremely cheaper alternatives (like PowerColor)

The manual says 1x pci express x 16 slot running at x4

oops, oh yes, I had the 4 series on my brain because that's the card he's upgrading from. I meant the 7850 and 7870 is best bang for buck.

Got rid of my EVGA gtx 660ti and now got the Sapphire 7950 OC with Boost Vapour-X. Really great looking card.

Sounds like that might be PCI-e 1. Is it an intel socket 775 motherboard? If that is the case, you will not be able to run the 7850 or 7870 in it, it needs PCI-e 2.0 at least, because of their chipsets.

Yeah its a socket 775 motherboard. What card would work with that?

A lot of socket 775's will work. What model is it? Some socket 775's have DDR3 capability and I think most have PCI-e 2.

This is only ddr2 and according to the manual its 1x pci express x 16 slot running at x4

That doesn't really say much. Did it not say anything about PCI-e 1 or 2.0? Just give the model and a quick google will give you the answer.

Yes, best would be to do this. But usually, if it says PCI-e x 16 in the manual, it means 1.

I read that some PCI-e 1 motherboards don't support 2.1, where as others do. What a pain. Looks like the best thing is just going to be to bite the bullet and upgrade the whole lot. Thanks for all the input.

Yeah, upgrade the whole lot... Or just post the model, and maybe you get lucky
