GPU Value Comparisons

Hey guys, thanks so much for this! Im looking at getting a new card to hopefully play most games for the next couple of years and am looking at either a 7870, 7950 or 660ti. They all seem to be quite neck and neck in terms of value for money but I'm leaning towards the 7950 since I've heard the nvidia 660ti kinda flops when you put it under 4x MSAA/tessellation is that true? Any input would be appreciated, also the main game I will be playing will be Guild Wars 2

Personally I would go for the 66Ti just because I'm a nvidia fan boy but your 100% correct. The 660Ti may struggle because of the 192bit bus for high AA setting. This in my eyes are not really a biggie because what if you cant get the frames you want at 4xMSAA? Its still a very good budget card with pretty much the best bang for buck sats out there.

The advantages of the 7950 though are the 384bit bus and the 3gb memory. It will probably give you a longer life time before you need a upgrade.

If the two cards where roughly the same price I would probably go for the 7950 because of the longer life although I'm a nvidia fan.

I had a similar problem a while back and just backed myself for the GTX670WF, great card, better than expected. Maybe you should look into it :)

Good luck

Thanks so much for you feedback, there is a substantial difference in price with the 670 tho, places I see are about R800 more, not sure if I'm willing to break the R4k mark for a card, especially since the performance gain doesnt seem to be that huge? May be wrong tho! :)

A Rand based value for money comparison is extremely useful! I Love it!

Suggestions:
Use only one supplier as a price-reference for all cards.

If you have the time, consider actually buying the cards and testing them yourself (perhaps MyBB could partially subsidize this, or you could find a sponsor, perhaps the supplier mentioned in my previous suggestion).

After each card was tested/bench-marked, it can be sold on the forum or given away in a prize draw etc. recovering the majority of the expenses of obtaining the cards.

Which ever supplier you use will greatly benefit from the publicity.

My 2 cents

Hi Guys,

Im looking for the best graphics card for around R1600. Will mostly be used for home office stuff, with the odd game thrown into the mix. (Need for speed, Call of duty, Sims 3 for the kids)

Running a i5-3470 processor on a msi z77a-g43 motherboard with a 550W PSU

Screen at the moment is 1600 x 900 but the will be upgraded to a full hd unit in the near future.

Thanks.

Grumpy, take a look at the AMD HD7770.
It will run the games you mentioned fine @ 1920x1080.

If you don't mind second hand cards, a GTX 560ti will do brilliantly :)

If I havent completely lost my touch, NDA is lifting tomorrow for the new Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan, but I'll be away having a long weekend :D So you'll all just have to wait until Monday (ish). But I'm sure you all have your favourite sites you'll be hitting up anyway, and at $999 I think this beast is out of reach for most of us anyway

Hey - is there anything "wrong" with powercolour- they seem to outprice everyone by a few hundred

There isn't anything wrong with them. They are excellent value for money cards, and you get free games with them, which you can download through Steam. Club3D cards are also great value for money, but PowerColor at the moment takes the cake. They are more well known overseas, especially in the Asian market. PowerColor saves cost by not always using custom coolers and PCBs, and also on their packaging and contents (actually a lot on packaging and contents, the only "things" you get with your HD7870 Myst are: HDMI converter, Installation CD, and the Booklet. No Crossfire cables or molex to PCIe 6pin adapters, no VGA adapters, etc.)

On a side note: I had to send back my PowerColor HD7870 Le Myst, since it was DOA. But, that is a rare occurrence and happens to all brands (some of them more than others)

Go visit www.Tomshardware.com and go read the reviews on their PowerColor cards. The HD7870 LE Myst was the last review on the GPUs. They use this card in all their current system build marathons (which is a review they do quarterly to try and find the best value for money PC builds between certain price brackets in $)

^^^ I got a PowerColor 7850 about 10 days ago to run in CF with my Gigabyte card, and it is running just fine. I got the PCS+ version which I believe delivers much better cooling. I've slightly OC'd it alongside the Gigabyte, and they both run at below 60C when gaming hard. With two games included, and a 2-year guarantee it is a steal at R2099!

where to get the cheapest GTX 670? Best i saw is leadtek one for R3930 odd rand....any better deals?

That's a good price for a GTX670, however, this is a better card for the same price: PowerColor AX7970

Sapphire card is also a great card. You must ask Wootware when they receive new stock, those things sell like hotcakes! I ordered my HD7870 LE from them on a Thursday, they were out of stock and received the shipment on the Monday. Had my card on the Tuesday, so waiting a few days is worth the performance and money you save! You can also look at the PowerColor HD7950, didn't check if they have stock, but there is no harm in just asking when they will receive their next shipment. Just ensure your PSU is op for the task though...

The change in price has a lot to do with the R vs $, which is terrible at the moment! My best advice to you would be to ask Wootware on new stock availability and then order 2 days before arrival of new stock, I promise you, it is worth the wait and you won't find any bargain close to that! Especially considering the 2 epic games you get with!!
