One should never joke with matters like that in any airport around the world but yes being asked the question 200 times would be annoying but she could have said that she did say clothes & if they felt she was lying they could check themselves.

Sorry that just invalidated all your pro-airport security arguments.
They're either just morons or enjoying their opportunity to lord it out. With the level and quality of crime in our country, the fact that they're wasting precious court time over people who said the word "bomb", says a lot.
Since when has it become illegal to say "I do not have a bomb."?

Well that is about as dumb as being asked your occupation and saying I'm not a child pornographer.
rule of thumb: In airports, don't say anything about hijacking, bombs, explosives, guns, knives or any other weapon to the security.

I realise this, but there's a difference between "taking these things seriously", maybe taking people aside for questioning or searching their suitcases and ARRESTING PEOPLE and putting them in jail.
The law doesn't work like that, you can't just arrest someone and dump them in jail cause they looked at you funny. Next thing you know we'll be Bolivia II.
With that granny they had dogs and bomb units there, they searched her and found nothing, the state prosecutor even advised them to let her off with a warning but they refused.
It's gone from cautious to ridiculous (or vindictive).

As a regular flyer, I can say spot on. Once at OR Tambo I insisted they either
- let me travel,
- let me speak to the head of their security or
- arrest me and I will sue them for wrongful arrest.
This was after phoning up before and actually checking if a certain hand tool was allowed in hand luggage or not, a hex driver that looks a bit like a screw-driver, except it has no tip and a hollow where the tip would be. Even less dangerous than a middle finger...
However it seems the tail wags the dog in many cases.
Yeah, this pretty much has no relevance to being an elderly person in South Africa. She would have been arrested pretty much anywhere in the world for making such an incredibly idiotic joke. In fact, other people HAVE been arrested. Besides that, she's 50, and therefore hardly the grey old granny the OP would like to portray her as.
