Graphics Card Advice

What are the specs of the system?
You need to understand that an old system will bottleneck a newer card into under performing.

System is fine for most cards.
Try to go for the 750ti...

Otherwise check out the Carbonite forums for a good second hand deal.

Also if you want to stay with that card and budget this particular card will be better as its slightly overclocked out the box.:

Thanks. How good will the graphics be though? I've don't know graphics cards very well. Also, would it be advisable to buy a cheaper card?

The graphics will be better than a ps3, by some distance.
I would not buy a cheaper card.

Oki. I've also noticed you get for example a Gtx640 thats a 2gig. Whereas the Gtx 750 is a 1gig. Difference? Which one would perform better?

Also need to buy two game controllers for PC. Any ideas?

I dont know the 750 but I know the 750ti can run most of the new games at High settings at 1080p.
This would then be better than PS3 graphics.

I would also not go any cheaper otherwise your son will bug you for a new card in a year. FACT.

The 750 and 750 Ti are pretty crap. They can run games, but not very well and they aren't prepared for the next few years of gaming. Wootware is the only place to buy graphics card in SA. They usually have great prices on their Powercolor Radeons. Just pick the one you can best afford. And bear in mind that the more you spend now, the further down the line the card will need replacing (not to mention how much better the gaming experience will be).

Dafuq you talking about, the 750ti is an absolutely amazing card and probably the best value for money out there... Get a 750ti and you won't have any issues for a couple of years.

I wouldnt say its crap. Its a decent card for the money he is looking to spend.
Like I said, it will run most games on high gfx at 1080p for the moment.
But it doesnt really future proof you much.

Ok, so in terms of future proofing, let's say 3 years, how much would I need to spend?

Depends on what graphics your son wants to play his games on. A 750Ti is a solid choice for your youngster, 2GB vram is good enough and it's super efficient on the power consumption thanks to the new maxwell arch. If you want the best bang for the buck, that's the card to buy. I'm sure it will run most games on medium - high at 1080p.

What's your budget btw?

I guess we just have different standards then, or play different games. My brother was looking for a reasonably priced card a few months ago and bought a sealed Gigabyte GTX 760 for R2.5k on Carbonite. Now that's good value.

Yup. That's an excellent card.
They mostly cost around the R3k mark though.
If he can stretch that high it's a very good option.
