I was playing dead space now and I started to smell this smell.
Basically, the best way to describe the smell was the smell of ironing.

Anyways, I ran HWMonitor and my graphics card (GeForce 8800 GTS) temp was sitting on 72°C

Since I've stopped playing, it's dropped to 67°C

This is definately not normal! especially the smell...

Comments??!

should have bought and ATI :)

you can allways buy an after market cooler, it should drop your temps to around 27°C - 30°C.

they sell for around R500.

That temp does not look bad, my HD3870 idles at 58-60, goes up to 80-85 under load, settles at 75 when the fan spins up.

Yeah my bro's 7950GT idles at 65 and gets to 105 degrees! Thats a type of plastic smell.

But since I modded his cooler its been peaking at 75 degres and 51 idle.

Why not use rivatuner and set fanspeed to max and maybe reapply some thermal paste

a temporary solution till you can figure out the problem is to use a normal house fan, put it next to your pc and switch it on while playing games.

search google, alot of the people that tweek gpu fan settings inside the driver files, you might find that your problem is a common one and solution might be sitting right under your nose.

also try put new thermal paste on. but house fan for temp solution will work wonders.

scotty give your card a good clean, more than likely dust slowing the fan down

I've done so, I took off the heat sink, and dismantled it. I noticed there was some dust, but not that much, i cleaned it regardless. the temp diff was minimal (about 3 degree's). it just can't explain it hey

Well, at least if a fire breaks out, you can call on Gdiza to put it out:p

Rule of thumb: If it ain't new, and it starts to smell anything remotely like smoke ... "Danger, Will Robinson!"

My 8800GTX idles at about 50 degrees, reaching about mid 70's during load. I am using a Thermalright cooler, big bloody thing, but I can see now that it really works.

I don't like that plastic smell myself, always makes me nervous and expecting a part to die.

I had over heating problems aswell on my old 6800GT, no matter what i did it just wouldnt help. I took it apart, put more arctic silver on, that helped for about 3 days. Get a fan and put it next to your PC, works like a dream :)

What I did with my bro's 7950 was I cut off the plastic of the cooler over the GPU chip and screwed on a 60cm fan which I pluged into the system fan thingy.

Then since the stock fan is busted, I screwed a 40cm fan(found from a P-I) over the stock fan and rewired them.

Now it idles at 51 degres and peaks at 75 in games and 87 in ATI tool.

And if u google, they say the Zalman 700CU cooler fits with some work.

Better do something about it :p

I'd say it's normal. My 6600GT OC idles at 58 to 60, and when in games goes to just under 80. I don't reckon it's that bad though, since the throttling starts at 135 and core shutdown happens at 145. Oh btw this is with an 80mm case fan blowin' onto the card. No exhaust fan though.
