Graphics card - help needed

How much of a difference is there between 4670 and 4650?
Is there a major performance difference?
 
A direct comparison between the 9600GT and the 4670 here

Seems the 9600GT gets the win for most games it seems...


You see this is the dilemma, the 4650 seems like it will be ample for Spore, and a lot of other current games, and I can get it for R570. Yes, he will not be able to play Crysis etc but he is not going to be at age 10 anyway.

I could, of course, look at spending a little more and getting the 4670 for R740 and get better performance, which will probably mean very little for now in terms of playing Spore, but will make it more "future proof". However, is the rest of the computer future proof? Probably not.

Then of course if I am paying R740 I might as well just think about going to R900 and getting the 9600GT which the above link shows to be even better. But then again where do I draw the line. I could just as well go for the 4850 for over a grand....

Bottom line is I need to decide between what will meet my needs now versus perhaps adding a little longevity to the graphics card usefulness. Of course added issues of power supplies come into it and it appears those "bigger" cards are more power hungry and I may need to an the cost of a PSU upgrade into the mix.

Remember he is currently playing these games with the Ati Radeon 200 Express onboard graphics! Pretty much any card is going to be an improvement. :)

In saying this these discussions are proving very useful in pointing things out that I need to be on the lookout for and giving me options to consider, so keep them coming. It'll only be this coming week that I will make the call... Thanks all
 
So how about the 4670 at R740 and a 2nd hand 500watt psu at a later stage for about R250?

Then you'll be future proofing your PSU as well for a while.
Future card upgrades could then be easier as you sell the 4670 and then just put some funds with that for a newer card.
But that's like a year or more down the line, dependant on his gaming habits.

But having cash would make it easy.... well a lot of cash. Pretty much just get the absolute best card on the market at the moment! The problem we have is trying to get the best on a budget! :)

I have to admit though to always having a reluctance to get the latest when it comes to computing. The "latest technology" is always helluva expensive and you know for a fact that less than a year down the line the price will drop dramatically when something new comes along.

I still say the 4670 is the best thanks to not needing external power. It's really not that complicated...
 
Oooh Oooh - just picked up my new toy I bought from gdiza - XFX Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB DDR3 XXX Edition. :D
I want to run home right now - but my team leader says "No." :(
 
Now for the important thing.... what does that brand, Force3D, mean to anyone on that 4670 @ R740? Will it not make any difference?

NO. Apparently they are all basically just the same made in the same way probably in the same factory, with different branding on them.

This was always the series of card I was really wanting to upgrade to as I've only ever heard good things about them.
So I'm really pleased and grateful to have got my paws on it :D
It's freaking huge compared to my little 8500GT :o
 
I would not read tomshardware... They just don't know how to test things and have to pay ASUS that they may test the boards. But that is just my opinion.
