Graphics cards PCIE Compatibility

Would a PCIE 2.1 graphics card run on a motherboard that only supports PCIE 2.0 or does the motherboard make the card backwards compatible?

I am looking in particular at the ECS G41T-M Motherboard & RADEON 5570 setup.

Are you smoking something? A 5570 will run to it's full potential on a PCI-express version 1.0 with a 4x slot even.
