I'm looking to buy a new graphics card cause my old NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT broke.

I don't really know much about graphics cards... What can you guys recommend? I don't do much gaming but am a photographer so must be able to run photoshop, etc 100%...

So far as the different makes go, what are good makes to look for? What's the difference between the different makes with the same "components"? For example, the CLUB 3D GEFORCE 220 and the Point Of View GT220 are both similarly priced and have the same GT220 so what's the difference?

Any help would be appreciated...

There is no difference both will run your games crap.

How much have you got to spend?

Not sure... as little as possible but as much as necessary to get things done (photoshop, 1080 full hd movies, etc) :o :D

Budget is very important. You can't get any assistance if you are not sure about the budget. R2000?

O wait no gaming invovled? Then just buy whatever you like. I bought a POV and it was very good. Both will run what you need 100%. Not much gaming might turn into gaming though, although i am not certain.

I missed the not much gaming part of your OP.

Thanks for the replies...
Budget is a bit tight at the moment...
Will the Point Of View GT220 work fine with Photoshop and playing full hd movies? What bout some light gaming like GTA Vice City, NFSMW, etc? The old GeForce 8600 GT did alright with those games and was only 512mb whereas the POV is 1gb.
Is R557.46 a good price for the Point Of View GT220 or are there any better buys you can recommend?

If you can spend a bit more also consider these

EVGA GeForce GT 430 1024MB GT430 R674
Difference between GT220 and GT430 is:
GT220's clock has 48 Cuda cores while the GT430 has 96 Cuda cores. The Evga's GT220's DDR2 memory run at 1000Mhz while the GT430's DDR3 memory run at 1400Mhz

If you can spend a bit more consider this
Club 3D Radeon HD 5670 1GB - 128-bit, 775MHz Clock, 1024MB 128-bit GDDR3 Memory 4000MHz, 400 Stream Processing Units R759

Keep in mind though that the rest of your Machines config also plays a large role here. You can have a Celeron Processor with a 5k card and will battle to do anything with it really.

What are the specs of your machine? This might make It a bit easier to comment ;)

have a look at the ATIs, they usually cheaper (and last longer)

Esquire is selling the HD5450 for R340

Few basic specs in my other thread

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
RAM: 2GB
CPU: Intel Duo Core E6550 2.33GHz

if 1080p is something you want to do you may want to research benchmarks between avivo and purevideo for the equivalent ati and nvidia cards respectively.

I'd go for this - no point in buying something no better than onboard (GT 220).

Out of curiosity are you using DVI or VGA?

Thanks for the reply... not sure what everything means but comparing the POV GT's...

Point Of View GT220 PCI-E 1GB SDDR3 128BIT Memory clock speed 1600Mhz, Processor clock speed 625Mhz
Point Of View GT430 PCI-E 1GB SDDR3 128BIT Memory clock speed 1600Mhz, Processor clock speed 700Mhz

Both the GT220 and the GT430 have DDR3 memory running at a clock speed of 1600Mhz :confused:

hmmm, Photoshop is more CPU intensive, and probably RAM intensive too if you dealing with large photos, getting another 2GB ram would improve your photoshop experiences more than a new GPU, so just get something small, they should run most of your loader games.

That is true... what do you recommend then? Maybe the Powercolor PCI-E Radeon AX5450 1024MB GDDR3 for R454.86?

Which one are you using?

A lot of people just use VGA because they have always used it, DVI makes a world of difference.

I'm using neither at the moment cause the pc is broken :D
I used to use VGA but then started using the DVI cable just cause it came with my new monitor, not because I knew it was any better :o

My motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics

ATi have better value in this segment - much better performance for the money. Get the best ATi 5xxx series card you can afford.
