Graphics cards

I agree with Synaesthesia, just when it comes down to to cards that are exactly the same model (just packaged by differnt companies) start looking at the cooler that's on the card. When you find a card, copy it's model name and everything and go to google and search: "graphics card name, model" benchmark. And it'll give you a detailed review of the card's speed.

I'm using neither at the moment cause the pc is broken :D
I used to use VGA but then started using the DVI cable just cause it came with my new monitor, not because I knew it was any better :o

My motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics

That Geforce GT430 would probably be your best bet.

Heya guys,
This might be a bit of a no-brainer(sorry for the hi-jack d7e7r7) but I need to make a decision here. I have an oldish Forsa 9500GT on my old rig, and have just bought a new i3 (3,06Gig) on a MSI mobo, 2gigs ddr3 1333 memory, 300W PSU, and would like to upgrade the graphics too. The machine is used as a normal house-hold PC, browsing, photo's, and my son burgles it for his games (ok.. and mine too;) ) The budget is tight, so I was looking at the MSI or Gigabyte 430 GT at around 800-900 rondts. If I go any bigger, ie 460GT, I'll have to upgrade the PSU as well, and that just puts everything out of the ball park!
Will there be a noticeable difference between the old 9500 and the 430GT's?
Whats sort of comparable in the Radeon range? I've always used nVidia, but have always wanted to try a Radeon...

Look here and here

Now... I know those tables are difficult to decipher if you dont know what you are looking at. But, they do show that the 430 has 3 times the shader processors and a higher clockspeed while using the same power as your 9500GT. It wont be 3 times as fast, due to memory bandwidth, but it will be a fair bit faster.

If I was you, I would probably look into either the GT440 or the AMD 5670

goto http://www.hwcompare.com and put any card against another to get an idea of performance differences. I compare all cards I buy here.

According to that site the "Powercolor PCI-E Radeon AX5570 512MB GDDR3" is better than the "Point Of View GT430 PCI-E 1GB SDDR3 128BIT Memory clock speed 1600Mhz, Processor clock speed 700Mhz" even though is has less ram (512mb vs 1gig) so I'm really confused now :(

How do I know if my PSU will even run the above graphics cards?

What does everyone recommend?

EDIT:
Also according to the site, my old Geforce 8600 is better at FSAA (whatever that is) than the GT 430. Is that saying I'm downgrading?? :wtf::confused::confused::confused:

According to the guys at the PC shop where I got my new PC, a 300W PSU should drive the 430 cards no problem, but once you go 460 upwards, you gonna have to do one "hupgrade"!!

@ Ancalagon ...Thanks for the info! The 5670 looks like it might it's way into my case...I can pick one up for around R720-00 in Durbs...that sound good?

I missed what you PSU is, but neither looks particularly power hungry.

It is going to depend on what you want. GT430 is probably going to have the edge in GPU accelerated 1080 video, while the 5570 looks like it will do better in gaming.

What made you choose the 5670 over the 5570?
Is that price for the 512mb or 1gb version?

It sounds like its a fair price and its a good card. WAY more powerful than your old card.

So you're saying the GT430 will be better in watching 1080 hd movies but the 5570 will be better in gaming?
How will the GT430 do in gaming?

Have a look at this review. Seems the 5570 is all round a better card, for both watching movies and games.

Comparing the two price wise the 5570 512mb (R559 ex vat) is similarly priced to the GT430 1gb (R589).

In the review are they comparing the 5570 512mb to the GT430 1gb or what?

The guy's who told me my graphics card is broken have quoted R579.00 for Msi N210 512MB DDR3 Direct x10.1 D-dub; Dvi & Hdmi and R180.00 to install it.

You guys reckon I'm better off getting the Powercolor PCI-E Radeon AX5570 512MB GDDR3 (R559 ex vat) or the Point Of View GT430 PCI-E 1GB SDDR3 128BIT Memory clock speed 1600Mhz, Processor clock speed 700Mhz (R589 ex vat) and installing it myself?

Yup without a doubt.

If you can use a screw driver and your hands then yes. Very simple. Unscrew unplug, replug rescrew turn on and hope you don't hear a bang.
