Great free games

In the spirit of straight old nostalgia, there are always the MUD's.

About 17 years ago I first logged onto Medievia MUD, and I played that game for the better part of 10 years and then kinda retired from the game. About a week ago, I logged back in, and shockingly, the game was still going, and there are still hundreds of people online playing it. Even more shockingly, a lot of those people still remembered my character!

There is something horribly addictive about mud, but the best part of it, it requires virtually zero bandwidth, South African latencies don't matter to much, and after 17 years of world development, it has a D&D world to rival any other game in the world (literally millions of rooms and hundreds of zones and thousands upon thousands of different pieces of equipment you can attempt to get and equip yourself with as you progress) . The game also has an entire economic system behind it, and while as in most D&D games, you wander around killing things to get equipment, you can also go to war on ships, join clans, kill other players and steal their equipment, auction stuff, you name it.

Sometimes, when looking at things like that, I really have to believe that the old school is best, I mean, how many games do you see these days that are born and endure 17 long years and are still there and still as active today as they were back then? It takes something very special to keep something going that long, and as far as I'm concerned, that MUD has it all!

If ya wanna check it out http://www.medievia.com, there is a client section on there to grab the client and download it. So yeah, this is me plugging Medievia mud in a big way, because after thousands of hours of playing the game over the years, I'm still not bored of it!

Played Soldat...
Good game, but no one plays it in South Africa (and it is found that there is not much people playing it at all).
That leaves me option to play internationally, which is short-lived option: Hosts don't like ~200ms ping players on their servers.
For that reason, I left any hopes playing it.

I'm also surprised nobody has mentioned WARSOW. http://www.warsow.net/
Arguably one of the best FPS I've played in terms of multiplayer mayhem (I think SAIX has a server?)

Set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
Speed and movement, that's what Warsow is all about. Like a true cyberathlete you jump, dash, dodge and walljump your way through the game. Grab those power-ups before your enemy does, plant the bomb before anyone sees you, and steal the enemy's flag before anyone knows what's going on!

League of Legends

Great DotA-like game with an awesome community. Much better than the local dota one at least. The above is a referral link - though I only get in-game prizes so if you want to try it, please use the link I provided. Cheers!
