Great free games

In the spirit of straight old nostalgia, there are always the MUD's.

About 17 years ago I first logged onto Medievia MUD, and I played that game for the better part of 10 years and then kinda retired from the game. About a week ago, I logged back in, and shockingly, the game was still going, and there are still hundreds of people online playing it. Even more shockingly, a lot of those people still remembered my character!

There is something horribly addictive about mud, but the best part of it, it requires virtually zero bandwidth, South African latencies don't matter to much, and after 17 years of world development, it has a D&D world to rival any other game in the world (literally millions of rooms and hundreds of zones and thousands upon thousands of different pieces of equipment you can attempt to get and equip yourself with as you progress) . The game also has an entire economic system behind it, and while as in most D&D games, you wander around killing things to get equipment, you can also go to war on ships, join clans, kill other players and steal their equipment, auction stuff, you name it.

Sometimes, when looking at things like that, I really have to believe that the old school is best, I mean, how many games do you see these days that are born and endure 17 long years and are still there and still as active today as they were back then? It takes something very special to keep something going that long, and as far as I'm concerned, that MUD has it all!

If ya wanna check it out http://www.medievia.com, there is a client section on there to grab the client and download it. So yeah, this is me plugging Medievia mud in a big way, because after thousands of hours of playing the game over the years, I'm still not bored of it!

Don't come here with your witchcraft!

You introduced me to MUD many moons ago and 5 mins into the game I was killed by a pack of bunnies. I've never felt so violated before and vowed never to return!

Is it still a text based role playing game?

Is it still a text based role playing game?

That it is :) Just... far more developed world than it used to be, and far more developed economic system, more equipment etc. It actually amazes me how much fun a bunch of text on the screen can be haha :)

Played Soldat...
Good game, but no one plays it in South Africa (and it is found that there is not much people playing it at all).
That leaves me option to play internationally, which is short-lived option: Hosts don't like ~200ms ping players on their servers.
For that reason, I left any hopes playing it.

saix hosted a server a while back there were about 8 of us that played regularly..normally played at around 8-9..was really cool :)
I think one or two of them still host a server now and then...

This makes me want to play again..sighblehsigh

oh I almost forgot...I found the 1.5 patch to be worse than 1.4..hit reg was shocking

Battle of immortals
More than 300 years after Ragnarok, the world of Motenia is still wrapped in chaos. A Goddess of Fate peered into the future, attempting to guide the mortals of Motenia to peace and safety. In her vision she saw an even greater era of destruction caused by a man called "The Dragon Emperor".

The Dragon Emperor was an infamous dictator known for his tyrannical and merciless reign. For every man in power, there exists someone who wishes to take that power, and the Dragon Emperor was no exception to that rule. Rebellions against his regime ran rampant across his empire. One group of elves, known as the Witches of the Millennium were able to utilize an ancient magic, sealing the Dragon Emperor in stone, along with his army.

The Goddess of Fate believes that the Dragon Emperor will soon find a way to free himself and his army from the curse, soon thereafter laying waste to the world. Only those who wield great artifacts of power will be able to stand a chance against the Dragon Emperor and his army.

CLASSES

Berzerker
Berzerkers concentrate almost exclusively on causing physical damage. Berzerkers still wear light armor, which gives them decent defense against physical attacks; however they are extremely susceptible to magical damage. Usually Berzerkers are found in the middle of a fight, never on its edges. Several Berzerker skills focus on weakening targets in terms of speed and/or defense.

Champion
Focusing almost entirely on defensive ability, Champions suffer slightly in terms of damage. Most of a Champion’s abilities focus on being in the center of the fight. Area of effect (AoE) taunts to save your friends from monsters, or even in some cases immobilizing their targets, Champions are invaluable tanks.

Heretic
Heretics come from a long line of religious fanatics. Once holy men, have now melded dark magic with light magic. Capable of dealing medium levels of magic damage, Heretics also have the ability to use magic defensively. Many of their abilities are capable of buffing or healing the caster. Heretics are a key component to any group encounter, whether it be against monsters or other players.

Magus
Magi are the masters of the elemental magic, utilizing them in order to create destruction and chaos. Maintaining distance from your enemies is essential in order to be successful as a Magus. Many of abilities of the Magi focus on crowd control and snaring/immobilizing your opponents, making this task much easier. Magi are also one of the more area of affect (AoE) focused classes, allowing them to take on multiple monsters at the same time with relative ease.

Slayer
Slayers spend a large majority of their training focusing on what makes things “tick”. They then spend an even larger amount of time studying on how to make the “ticking” stop. Many Slayer abilities utilize poisons and the elements in order to cause a blend of both physical and magical damage. While being fragile and weak in terms of defense, their offensive ability is almost unmatched.

MOUNTS & PETS SYSTEM

The mount system in Battle of the Immortals is really quite unique. In a lot of current MMORPGs, players can upgrade their mount in order to increase its speed. In BoI, upgrading your mount not only increases its speed, but changes the way it looks as well as allowing your mount to learn skills! Not only does this mount gain a more aggressive look from upgrading, but it also gains the ability to blink as well as sprint. Let’s not forget that its base speed increases each time you upgrade it!

Mounts aren’t the only form of companion you’ll be able to bring along with you during your journeys in BoI. Combat Pets are a key component of BoI. As you fight the denizens of the world, every now and then you’ll have the opportunity to tame a monster that you kill. This means that almost any monster you encounter in BoI can be a potential pet.

Also Runes of Magic.

Taborea was once a book in which the creation of a simple world of flora and fauna was supposed to be recorded, but today it is full of myths and legends.
The continents are covered by baffling and cryptic traces of time long gone. In the Age of discovery the people of Taborea are now on a quest to find out about their mystical past.

Dual Class System

When starting a new career, adventurers can choose to be a warrior, scout, priest, knight, mage, rogue, warden or druid. When a player's character reaches level 10, they can add a second class. The choice of first and second class depends on the race you have chosen. Therefore Elves can combine Warriors, Scouts, Rogues, Wardens, Mages, and Druids. Humans cannot choose Wardens and Druids but instead have the choice of Priest and Knight.

To switch between them, players must visit a special class trainer e.g. in the town of Varanas located in the starting region. Players have full access to the complete level-based skill set of their active primary class at all times. Simultaneously only the "non-specific" skills of their secondary class are available.

Moreover the character attributes of the secondary class add up to those of their primary class with 10 percent of their value. However, all experience, attribute and talent points gathered through adventures accumulate exclusively to the active primary class. Therefore, only the skills of the primary class can be upgraded by distribution of talent points. In any case, the level of the secondary class cannot surmount the level of the primary profession. To level up their secondary class, players must register it as their primary class with any class trainer.

Tactical Options

Using the dual class system of Runes of Magic wisely, players can build up their characters as multi-functional all-rounders. With a scout as secondary class, characters can use bows for example. With rogues as secondary they can use projectile weapons, warriors will give you axes etc.. Combinations such as melee fighters enhanced with several range combat skills as well as priests that fight with axes become possible. The range of possibilities gives solo and group players alike many interesting tactical choices for PvE. RPG players will love the broad spectrum of character interpretation.

The skills of the eight main classes make use of different energy types. Warriors use rage, scouts use focus, rogues need energy and mages, priests, knights, mages, wardens and druids fight with mana. Players can apply these energy types independently from each other. Therefore, they can use the dual class system of Runes of Magic to build up dangerous specialists which are also perfectly suited for group play. For example, smart PC adventurers could create a mighty bombardier with the combination of scout and mage. If, for example, the character runs out of focus, they can simply switch to mana and can immediately launch the skills of their secondary mage class. In contrast to that, a combined knight-warrior class will be the ultimate melee fighter. But players need to be careful with some combinations: mages and priests use the same mana pool which can quickly dry out your resources.
