Does South Africa still have the facilities to print new green ID books, or did they destroy them after changing over to the new digital "credit card" ID?

Nope, only ID cards. Been like that for over 2 years already

BIG Brothers little helpers

Does one need to give a full set of fingerprints for the new ID card ?
or
Do they just carry over what you already gave for the old green ID book ?

Does anyone know how to access any of the info that is on the new ID card ?

I am ALWAYS amazed at the gullibility of South Africans
EVERYONE hates the current crooked corrupt ANC -- the ruling regime
SURELY people understand that they also run HOME AFFAIRS -- the issuer of the new smart card ID
SURELY people understand that by acquiescing to RICA / FICA HANIS -- new unreadable smart card ID and a hundred other stupid regulations , and providing ALL their private and confidential information
THEY are actually providing ALL of this to the ANC ( actually the ANC's masters )

WITHOUT stopping for one minute to ask themselves any of these questions !!!!!!!!!!!
Just trusting blindly.

I will check, but if iirc my SO had to renew her Id last year, and she could only get the green book.
Sometimes, that particular branch was not ready for the Smart ID cards so they gave the book

I applied for the ID card and kept the book. So I have both.

Iirc they only took about 3 fingers a hand for the card. There was no difference to what I supplied them for the card compared to when I applied for the book in 2012.

So, when this project was still in it's infant stages we went to visit the client - that'll be the big Home Affaris building int PTA. There is this huge room with rows and rows of these grey filing cabinets that looks like it came out of the set of The Matrix. These cabinets contain the offline/backup copies of every citizen's finger prints and HANIS contains the digital versions. That was before the new ID card...

So my question to you is - what the actual fsck are you on about? It's not like you are providing them with anything they don't know already. Have you got any idea what type of info is in the SARS database?

Stop being paranoid.

^^ That. The old paper books are no longer manufactured.

You're both wrong.

If you are not South African by birth, you get a green ID book. The middle pages that used to have licenses in them are now all Record of Voting. My business partner is Australian and he had to get a new ID earlier this year. I went at the same time for my passport. I got the card, him the book.

What is your point? Try opening a bank account without proof of identity. Try getting a drivers licence. I don't like the idea of keeping my money under my mattress.

Okay thanks guys/ladies.

So now, say I need a new ID, I'm 18 years old (don't have an ID yet), and I don't know my real name, I'm homeless, but I've been living in South Africa since I was born, then can I apply for an ID, and can I choose whatever name I like? Or can Home Affairs find my fingerprints on the system, and tell me my Real Name?

If you've never had an ID, how would they have your fingerprints?

Haha, good point. Okay, then say I DID have an ID many years ago, then lost my book, then forgot my name, but still remember being born in SA, would Home Affairs be able to tell me who I am based on features such as: photo of face, fingerprints, date of birth, election voting locations/stamps in ID book, etc?

IIRC, this hypothetical situation (or at least something similar) was faced by millions of people in 1993/4 as we prepared for our first free elections. Most people at least knew their names and at some point had been baptised and that doopsertifikaat was used to establish identity and approximate date of birth. Later, reissues were made as people who were given ID books using this method wanted to correct their dates of birth.

You can do some research on this but I doubt you would be able to just walk in and ask for your ID. If the prints match an ID, that will be you. If they do not, then a long battle awaits. If you are really old and not white, it would probably be easier due to the apartheid government's lack of interest in registering non-white citizens. I speak under correction, of course.

Which is why you need a birth certificate to get an ID.

So that would be your starting point. Not getting the ID directly.

But what is the hypothetical point here?

DOMPAS

I am pleased you mention -- the MATRIX
and
Paranoid in the same post ... :crylaugh:

Perhaps you could now tell us WHAT is in the SARS database ......????

What am I on about -- I suppose you are too young to have experienced the -- DOMPAS ??
or
SHARPEVILLE

Perhaps those people could not spell -- paranoid -- although I am sure they knew what it FELT LIKE
It is a shame that although they had a problem with the old regimes DOMPAS they do not understand that there is NO difference with the new regimes DOMPAS
They are ALL unnecessary intrusions of the state into the private life of its citizens
Just wait until the new regime uses the new DOMPAS for the same purposes as the old DOMPAS !!!!!!!!!!!

Coming soon .......
PS ; They do NOT have mine ( IF they do these were obtained extralegally )

Desperation

You would have to hijack a home affairs office ( with a toy gun )
or
Commit Suicide
( ALL real life case scenarios )

Ooh, I didn't know that. Thanks, I'll google "South Africa ID for first democratic election" and see what it says. I'm particularly curious about the organizing systems used to store this information. Who would they link my fingerprint to an ID/identity in the system? Do they use fingerprint scanners? Or perhaps something like the FBI uses to match fingerprints?
