Since Google killed push email on iOS mail.app I'd expect to see more migration away from gmail. I know when the time comes to replace my existing phone I'll be shifting at least four domains away.

I generally don't use the Gmail app nor Push mail for that matter to save on battery.

Also to save my sanity when not using Mailbox I liked having my mail checked only every half hour.

...that image could be loaded from their site. If you have trusteer or rapport installed by your internet banking, either of those will register a connect to a known phishing attack and as a result suspend your online banking.

That's just a small example of the many I work with.

Surely e-mail isn't your only possible vector then? I use Little Snitch precisely to police outgoing connections, regardless of the app.

No, it isn't. Been using LS since it's public beta. Will never run a mac without it. Generally, workflow is block all but mail ports. Then, when I use an image-rich html email, I need to let signal through to http.

Little Snitch certainly doesn't help in this case, unless of course you want to try bury yourself in a mammoth host / port rule base.

There's really no easy way to prevent this embedded content crap: stateful inspection firewalls and / or proxy firewalls do a better job than LS, but they too are not perfect by any measure; hence it's not a good thing that Apple stripped this functionality without first resolving or at least providing better features to manage rich text / html emails.
