So, I only change OSes at the end of the year when I have no clients to feed - it case things go tits up. And Mavericks is a bitch! So far, I hate:
(1) Mail: No plain text. I mean, WTF apple!
(2) Mail: Smart Mailboxes show unread the count is wrong and well documented as well. Very annoying.

More to come. What are yours? And can you solve mine? My current solution is to use thunderbird.

1) Screen Shot 2013-12-23 at 2013•12•23 20.12.13 .PNG or am I missing something?

2) My smart mailbox seems fine.

(1) That is for composed mail. For received mail, it insists on showing the HTML ver.
(2) Did you do a fresh install or upgrade? Create a mailbox to show unread message from today. Is the count correct?

I'll create a new smart mailbox ASAP but in the meantime are you using gmail and have you updated to 10.9.1 which was supposed to have addressed smart mailbox issues?

No Gmail - straight POP. And update was done, yes.
I created the smart mailbox as requested and so far it seems to be working - I'll see how it goes over the next day or so.

That plain text alternative that used to be present prior to Mavericks is indeed missing. What an odd omission. it will be nice to see it back!

As as temporary stand in (view, message, raw source):
Command-Alt-U

How does the free mail reader that comes with Windows compare ?

Outlook Express? Not anymore. And yes, OE does the same things: 2nd button, go to the Properties, 'Details' tab -> "Message Source". :) Good things, there is an option to write messages in plain text.
