Grocery Specials Thread

Best before 12 August '16 is the date on the box I just cracked open.

@cerebus - If you are in Somerset West you are welcome to come and collect a box from me.

I'll take you up on that offer :D

So we bit the bullet yesterday and bought a beef hind quarter. They had C grade for R45/kg but we ended up going for A grade with a lot less fat @ R49/kg. Butcher also cut and packaged it nicely in sizes for a family of 3.

Meat prices are not going to be pretty in the coming months so we decided to stock up. If we had more freezer space I would have bought a whole pig as well but freezer is currently packed to the brim.

Will look to get bulk pork and chicken in a month or so when some space clears up

which butcher?

which butcher?

We went to Bynes Butchery out on Van der Hoff. Bit of a drive but worth it.

I know their meat is good quality because a friend of ours had a biltong shop in Harties and always sourced from them and recommended them.

You can also try Beefcor's depot in Pretoria West. Their prices were actually even better @ R41/kg for C grade and R47/kg for A Grade. Will maybe try them next time.

Their (Bynes) fillet at R120 per kg is worth it as well.

Thanks, Bynes Butchery looks to be a 15 minute drive from me. Can you give me a rough idea of how many kilos a hind quarter would be?

Just this morning I was thinking that I need to get a chest freezer so that I can stock up when I spot a bargain - it would need to be a small one though because I have little space for it.

And they have the perfect biltong to fat ratio for keto eating. :D

Couldn't stop eating this yesterday while we waited for them to pack our meat.

builders warehouse briquettes are R25 per 5kg
meatworld wonderboom: a grade hind is R48/kg...roughly adds up to R3 000 and they also cut it according to your specs.

whats the quality of that friquettes/charcoal at builders? some burn so quickly.

what exactly is a hind quarter? at that price its a whole cow?

It is a quarter of a cow. Specifically a quarter from the rear part.

You mostly plenty of steaks, mince and some stewing meat from it. The front quarter is more for stewing meat and mince.

so yours was also a couple of grand?

Yep..you get around 60-65kg...you have to take the whole quarter if you want it at that price...
I know at meatworld you do sometimes get for around R2 500, but thats if you come early or on days when they have just received new stock.

Best option is to team up with someone & share the cost...either someone you find in the queue or a friend at home...they cut the meat equally inside the the butchery. And its labelled properly as well.

My problem is the storage rather than the initial cost :(

It was our problem too until eBucks and Makro sorted that out for us with a chest freezer.

All the warnings are out there and butcher also mentioned it that meat prices will be increasing by about 50% in the next coming months.
