GT5: The Countdown Begins!

From IGN's review:

At least the [B-spec] races, which utilize Gran Turismo's typically brilliant replay facilities alongside a generous ream of telemetry, are pretty to look at, and the A.I is itself convincing. Unfortunately the same can't be said when it's yourself in charge, and A-Spec's races aren't helped by the return of the series' now trademark zombie A.I. Any tweaks that have been made are hard to decipher as by and large your fellow racers will pay little attention to your on-track maneuvers, often braking at inexplicable moments and turning what should be a high-octane contest into a comic bout of very expensive bumper cars.

Photo mode shows the cars in all their perfectly rendered glory.

And like bumper cars they're likely to bounce off each other with little consequence. The inclusion of damage is so slight as to be insignificant, and even the most violent of crashes will only result in a polygon shifting slightly ajar. There's an unconvincing lack of weight to the big on-track collisions, and as before in Gran Turismo games it does much to break the immersion its handling model does so well to establish. A shame, as drive into a wall hard and long enough (though you'll have to attack it with the ferocity and persistence of a dog on heat) and the damage model will slowly begin to expose itself – something it will more readily do, we hope, after a future patch.

Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game – it’s driving is as exhilarating as anything that’s gone before, and its slavish obsession with the minutiae of many of its cars ensure it's an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Its brilliance on the track, however is matched by its sloppiness off of it, and there’s a lack of polish that would at one time have seemed sacrilegious to the series. Ultimately its driving wins out to ensure that it’s still a great game, but it leaves that nagging doubt; this could have been a masterpiece were it not for the fact that Polyphony was so absorbed with the detail that it took its eye off the ball.

Enjoy your pretty bumper cars. At least you can entertain yourselves by trying to replicate this:

Driving simulator indeed.

From Eurogamer:

Eurogamer: 9/10

For me, this is the Holy Grail of driving games. [...]plug a good force-feedback steering wheel into your PS3 and the game is transformed. This is undoubtedly the best way to experience the phenomenal physical handling model. [...]Gran Turismo has a reputation for sterility which it really doesn't deserve. If you know cars and know where to look, there's passion and fantasy and even humour here. And most significantly, there's variety.

This is where GT5 trumps both its predecessors and its rivals. You see, the heart of the game has moved. It's no longer in the GT Mode, despite its improved pace, nor the tuning screen or parts shop. It's certainly not in the vestigial licence tests which are still there but no longer serve much purpose, Polyphony finally having given in and implemented a simple, sensible levelling system to unlock cars and events instead. The game's heart is in those Special Events. [...]It's a more impressive achievement than 1000 cars; this one section of GT5 communicates the spirit of motor racing in all its forms better than any other game.

With Gran Turismo 5, I found myself doing something I've never done with a racing game before: driving simply for the joy of it. Just as with a great car, Gran Turismo 5 feels so great that it begs to be driven. You can't put it down. I found myself cruising the 8.5 miles of Circuit de la Sarthe this week just to enjoy the drive. I found that when you get in the zone and really get in tune with the controls, this game really does let you tap into the pleasures of driving and racing. I'd like to imagine that Polyphony Digital has spent all this time fine tuning this game for this very feeling. [...] The level of care taken by the people at Polyphony Digital shines in every aspect of this title, and this makes for a racing game that truly has no parallel. Gran Turismo 5 is a massive love letter to those that love cars. This is their dream videogame.

GamerFitNation : A+

Gran Turismo 5 has changes the way I see racing games, it has taught me to when choosing a car every aspect matters, whether it’s the weight, spring, model, speed isn’t always what you should look for. Graphic developers have reached another visual achievement that will make you believe there are no limits to what they can do. Design and Feature wise everything is brilliantly put together and you can see why it took 5 years for this game to be release. Game-play comes together very well and sets a new learning curve for old and new drives of the series. Replay ability…If you can finished game which I believe to be impossible at the moment, then you’ll play it over and over again. Some people may disagree, but I honestly found nothing wrong with this game. So after you have had your thanksgiving meal with the family, I suggest you enjoy some GT5. Play standing up to burn more calories, and take breaks when need. Five years was a long time, but it was well worth the wait.

IGNore teh troll...

From Eurogamer:

Dude, that ain't trolling - a bit facetious perhaps 'tis all.

Had this been as great as the hype-machine would want, I'd rush out and get a PS3 just for this. I am a petrolhead first and foremost. Alas it seems that issues present since the inception of the GT franchise - issues that really grate my carrot, mind - are still there. This is inexcusable in my opinion. AI that still isn't spatially aware... why?

Added to that the fact that only 200 out of the brazillion cars are properly modelled, and the amount of Honda/Mazda/Nissan filler again packed into it, and I'm just less than impressed.

However I sincerely do hope you chaps enjoy it. Just don't become ranting fanboy loonies in the process.

It's obvious the IGN dude didn't have enough time to play the game. There IS brake customisation, unlocked at a later stage. And while IGN think the AI is unimproved, Eurogamer for example says it's much improved. IGN hates Cape Ring, while Eurogamer loves it. In the end one's personal opinions and preference will shine through in a review. Most important to me is the fantastic handling, and that's where all reviewers seem to have consensus.

Agreed that is the most important single facet of any game that attempts to combine racing and simulation, but I find the fact that they didn't even bother with a rudimentary dashboard view for 80% of the cars rather peculiar. 6 years, give or take...

I've grown to love Forza's dash camera; it adds hugely to the immersion for me. Being able to only experience that in GT5 with what amounts to about 1/3 of the number of cars I've got with all the DLC in Forza3 just means to me the expense of a PS3 + GT5 would not be justified.

It's a pity though. I was half rearing for an excuse to go rape the credit card. :p

got my signature edition this morning, cant play yet though bcos writing exams in the afternoon and havent studied yet:sick:
