Update time!

Getting 2x EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ 4GB GDDR5 256bit graphics card ,ETA is 11 june.

Between the R9290 and GTX970, which would you suggest, taking "bang for buck" into account? I note the AMD card has a 512bit bus whilst the nVidia one has only a 256bit?

I would go for the R9290 ,because I personally think the extra R1000 that you would of spend on the gtx 970 can be used for an SSD for your system or something else.

In raw performance the gtx 970 is faster and runs cooler than the R9290 ,but dx12 should close the performance cap and both cards should run about the same fps in dx12 games.

The R9290 also offers the full 4gb vram and the gtx 970 can only really use 3.5Gb of the 4GB it has.

What would you say comparing a 290x to a 970 gtx then?

If the 290x was the same price as 970 I would go for the 290x.

The 290x is normally more expensive than a 970 ,so I would take the cheaper one of the 2 if it comes down to that.
I would spend around R400 extra on 290x over the 970 ,otherwise I would take the 970.

290x Should be faster than the 970 in most games and in dx12 games.

The XFX R9 290x would be R5400 ,because it is on special.

Normally it is around R6000.

I prefer to bring the 970s in ,just because there seems to be more nvidia fanboys :)

I had the R9 290x cards when I started ,did not sell well at all.
 
Is it worth looking for an upgrade of my MSI GTX 660Ti, I want a decent step up from its performance. If I should upgrade, what would you recommend and how much would you give as a trade in value for my old card. (Unfortunately I don't think I have the original box)

Hello

The gtx 660ti is not a bad card ,but the new games will struggle on high settings.

I would suggest you go straight to the gtx 970 ,it should last you for a while!

I can offer you R1600 for your old card.

I always check the chart on Toms Hardware. According to them you should jump at least 3 levels to make an upgrade worthwhile, so the GTX 970 is the minimum recommended upgrade, like GTX Gaming said.
 
Thanks guys, one more question thought: The ASUS Strix GTX 970 or EVGA GTX 970 SSC, only R100 difference on your site?

Go for SSC it has a new PCB with a 8 and 6 pin providing better power to the card. The evga is also clocked at 1342mhz boost while the asus is only 1253mhz.

The asus is slightly more expensive ,because the dollar went up by a bit when I ordered it .

go got the evga, its a great card,i got the 1st ones (old pcb 6+6)

and overclocks great,running at 1489mhz ,used to able to push it all to 1.5ghz,then i updated my bios of my motherboard,in hope i can take it even past that but nope :( now only get solid stable at 1489mhz


with your better power delivery,updated pcb, it will be even better !!

What are the chances of getting a 980ti? I'm looking to sell off or trade in my evga 980 for 1 of them
