A security guard who was found guilty of raping a chicken has been ordered to pay a R500 fine.

The Star reported on Wednesday that the man admitted to having sex with the hen, which was so badly injured that it had to be euthanised after the incident.

The man pleaded guilty in the Barberton Magistrate's Court.

According to the report, the incident took place last November. The Barberton SPCA took the hen to a veterinarian after its intestines became dislodged during the sexual act. The injuries were too severe to treat.

The NSPCA said bestiality is a criminal offence, and is more common than people realised.

Charges were laid against the man in terms of the Animals Protection Act of 1962.

In July last year, a Pretoria woman was found guilty on four counts of bestiality after admitting to having sex with two dogs on four occasions. She is spending the year under correctional supervision, and was ordered to attend rehabilitation programmes.
