Not really what matters though. The guy's job presumably entails a smidgen of positive morality and trustworthiness (otherwise he likely wouldn't have been hired in the first place). So it's interesting that his occupation is that of a guard.

All the same, it's a curious bit of information that adds to the flavour of the article. Imagine if articles were as sterile as "Person performed sexual act on domestic livestock."

Is it important that the person was male, the specifics of what he did to the animal or in fact that the animal was a chicken? Probably not but the reaction clearly differs once you know it was a man, that it was an evocative word like "rape" and that the animal was a frail chicken.

Had the man been a chartered accountant or an IT specialist then it would obviously be a greater impact on our perception of civilised society and we'd obviously find it a fascinating bit of information.

Long story short: it makes for interesting/sensationalist/shock media and that gets the clicks which attracts the ad revenue.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of "politically correct" media that sterilises details so as to not offend any demographics or create stereotypes.

The science of tragedy humour is quite clear - we often make jokes about bad things to help our minds cope with the harsh reality of the human condition, natural cruelty and general malaise. It is therapeutic. But thanks for judging us from high up there on your horse - just try not to fall of, because then the jokes will flow as well. Not because we are cruel or callous but because it is our way of coping with the tragedy.
