so i sometime have unusual or unorthodox ways of doing things.
it would seem a couple of friends find my guests vs visitors approach is a little less than ordinary.

typically if i have a couple of friends staying over for a couple of days, i would explain to them they are guests - not visitors.
so as guests, they need to treat my home as their own.
if they want anything to eat or drink - go off to the kitchen and forage around in the pantry, fridge etc - find what you feel like and help yourself.
come and go as you please.
if you want to use a car, just leave a note and take it.
meal times - if you are around, breakfast / dinner will be made for all - if you are not around, do your own thing when you are back.
my view on this is i am freed of the burden of being a "helicopter host", and guests have the freedom to do what they want, when they want.

visitors however get the "helicopter host" treatment.

the distinction i draw between guests and visitors, is guests are using my home to attend some event / function in the city - not coming to specifically visit me.
whereas visitors are coming specifically to spend time with me.

am i alone in this approach - surely not ?

I have a simar view.
If you asked if you can stay over because you have to do a thing and need a place to stay close by thats different from coming to visit to be social.

First one, this isn't a BnB sort yourself out and do your thing unless we made plans to eat/travel/etc together. Second one is more hospitality and social.

Sponges vs visitors? 🧐

I am from Jozi and not from CT like you. No one in the right mind would visit us in Jozi like they do for CT people perhaps. That seems to be one of the "advantages" of being in Jozi.

I get you but I would have worded it the other way around.

Guests are the ones I specially plan for socialising with and organising set meals etc etc.

Visitors are the ones I leave to their own devices.
