Awesome stuff!

Cant we get a General Poll consisting of the following:

What Internet Connection do you have?
1.) ADSL - 1MB
2.) ADSL - 512K
3.) ADSL - 384K
4.) ADSL - 192K
5.) Sentech MyWireless - 128K->1Mb (dont think there are too many with ST so speed packages wont matter much? Just a thought)
6.) Iburst Wireless - 1MB
7.) Vodacom 3G
8.) MTN 3G
9.) WISP
10.) Other, please state which. (If its possible of course)

So how about it? A seperate, sticky poll? :)

edit - for registered users only!

kilps, I'm not 100% sure if I understand correctly, are you referring to this...?

We are using vBulletin v3.5.0, whereas ubuntuforums.org are using v3.5.1 - perhaps it is a feature of version 3.5.1...
Hi IC/Kilps

There is indeed a hack that will allow for ads to be displayed to non-registered visitors only, but this will only be a last resort if we really need to generate additional revenue. The substantial growth of MyADSL meant that our expenses have soared over the last few months, but it looks like we will be able to cover all these costs with some additional advertising on the news section. I think we all prefer as few ads as possible on the forum, and we will try to keep it that way…even for guests :D

Regards,

RPM

Sorry - I should have linked to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=521246#post521246 - so that there is something like this.

Anyone else notice how many guest forumees we have daily?

Well, welcome welcome to all our guests.

Please do us a massive favour and if you are a regular guest, register?
Our forum's greatest strength is in our numbers. The more registered regular users of this forum we have, the more weight we have with the powers that be.

I dont know how much y'all know but if all your smaller ISP's formed a co'operative and instead of trying to get a small share in an even smaller market become the hunter instead of the hunted which is what is currently happening from all I read here. Hell if with all the purchasing power you will garner with the conglomeration of ten or more medium sized ISp's you could BUY your own backbone and then play Telkom at its own game!

Just think, to be able to offer new clients FREE internet for the first three months if they sign up for a 9 month contract....... kinda like an Africa On Line or Bulldogdsl (UK) which offers thier clients 8meg broadband and reduced call rates.

As they say dont take a dog into a shark pool, become the shark!

...........................................................................................

The problem with speed is its addictive, I always want more, more speed greater bandwidth and video on demand when I want it! Its my computer dammit!:D

problem is the local loop. the core network still belongs to telkom. regardless of which backbone you running on, you still have to go through a telkom exchange 1st. if you look at the larger ISP's MWEB, IS etc they haven't been able to do much because of this. merging small and medium sized ISP's won't have much of an effect either. if the local loop was unbundled and ISP's had direct access to the exchanges we might see a much bigger difference, both in terms of broadband as well as telephony

Welcome webslave! Good point you are making here! Even without LLU, a co-op of ISP's would give them more bargaining power, since they become a bigger customer! So, yes, it IS a valid idea! Thanks for the input! (Just hope that the ISP's read this as well! :D)

It just makes me wonder why no-one here seems to have picked up on the (to my mind anyway) importance of information for keeping the people up and the tyrants on the back heel and not large and in charge. The more information that is freely available the (hopefully lol) better informed the populace is

Look at the sms message and flash mobbing, a cool way of getting the message across to the new generation, start a gathering by getting subscribers to 'flash mob' the department/politician to the point where they want to get behind this 'issue' becuase it will get them noticed - as the papers say there is no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to the news. If you all are so gung ho about this issue stop whinging about it and do something nationwide across all populations and incomes and get the message though consistantly, every day, week, month or as Mr Churchill said, 'never give up' and you will win. If you have people who are lawyers, promoters PR agents get them involved to donate thier expertise and dominate the news, make this an issue if it means this much to you, lobby ALL your politicians and local councellors to get thie LLU done!

Nice going. Missed member 8000, but welcome. Also welcome back to tibby.dude and ajak who's absences were almost missed :D Now if Peapod would kindly return, and maybe if Perdition would put in a late-night appearence, it'll be just like old times!

lol, now this is interesting... where do you see your member number

lol, now this is interesting... where do you see your member number
Me guessing: if you look at the opening page of mybroadband/the opening page of the forums - at the bottom is a list of the members that are/have been online in the last X minutes (how many minutes?) And - if you point your mouse at a member - it gives you their member number - mines' 12399 - tell me if I'm wrong? - Or maybe this is the user number - it is always the same!?

Also - I notice we are now at 8213 members - but when I look at the members list it shows 7896 members - where are the other 317?! Do we really have this many 'hidden' users - and who are they??!

Come out of the woodwork - all of you!! :D
