Guild Wars, questions...

I haven't been following this thread all the time so haven't read it all but by the sounds of it, guildwars is awesome!!

Im seriously considering buying it and spending countless hours online. But just want to check a few things first.

- Is it worth me buying the original guildwars now or should I just buy the sequel?

- Do you need to have the original installed before you can install and play the sequel?

- Is the sequel even available here yet? Is it cool :) ?

Sorry if these questions have already been answered but as I said, I haven't followed this whole huge thread ;)

Thanks

- Buy the sequel first I guess. You will probably end up buying both if you like it.

- You can buy just the sequel aka Factions, but if you have both, they can be linked to provide one bigger game area.

- Factions is available from Friday - 28 April.

Hey Rissen,

- Guildwars and the expanision are independent from each other. Though the two new characters are only available in the expansion as is the rest of the new continent.

- The expansion should be out officially this weekend although thanks to SA customs there have been delays to the normal and collector editions, till the first week of May apparently. But you can play them ONLINE if you had purchased the pre-order pack. ;)

I hope i have all that right.

Ok cool, thanks. Darn I was going to go out and buy it this afternoon and start playing it tomorrow since its a public holiday.

thanks

can any1 tell me if i link my accounts will i be able to play with my lvl 20 necro in the new world or will i need to create a new char ?

if you're willing to spend R600 in total on both then i'd say get the first 1 tomorrow for the long weekend!!! you wont regret it ;) then buy GW factions when it comes out in a week or 2.

it'll def be worth having both because as gkm said you'll be able to travel between both game worlds...so if you doing a couple of missions with some friends or you've joined a guild for eg. and are doing missions together.....
and the guys want to do some missions on the first continent and then go back to the second continent etc. you'd be able go for it because you have both games. that wouldn't be an option if you only buy 1 or the other.

Did you play in the preview event ? (i didn't )

How did it work then...i'm assuming it would be the same....

Well, ive decided. Im going to go and buy guildwars tomorrow morning. But I see that ill have to update the game and it seems that it may be several hundred megs. Ive only got about 800MB left till I reach my cap this month. Is that going to be a problem?

Also,...does the game use much bandwidth while playing? I presume its not much of a resource hog. Im on a 3gig cap so I dont want to be playing a game that chows that too fast.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing you all online :)

@DS: Yes, your character will be able to move between continents. I think the boat in Lion's Arch will transport you, but we shall find out for sure soon. I think there will be other requirements as well for being able to move between continents, but a level 20 character should be able to meet them.

@RissenN: GW uses about 1MB per hour. However, the initial updates may be an issue for you. Just do not leave the game in the login screen, then the updates should happen slowly while playing. The updates happen fast in the login screen.

sry guys, but i am slightly cofused

about the pre-order edition: was that just for the preview or will it allow me to download factions without having to wait for the game itself to arrive, or will i still have to buy the game itself??

@mccrack - u want to farm again tonight? ;)

Hi RisseN, welcome to our world!! :D
Bandwidth-wise after initial installation, it will be around 700MB+, this is about the amount that was streamed for the preview event. It may even be more than that now, with some of the other updates they have made in the meantime.

I am thinking the amount will decrease though, if u have a Factions copy (ye, IF u have one to install), seeing it should install the GW and Cantha continents from CD, and not having to download it. Just what I'm thinking. :p

bw usage is very low, the game can be played on a 56k line. I have played it several times with GPRS and no issues, cept for one night, which I think was our / my side.
Used about 15MB in more than 10hrs of play on GPRS, so ye, comes to about 1+ MB / hr.

Some guys have also copied / written their dat files to DVD in order to have all data immediately available, i.e. no need to download.

The info from Arenanet is:
---------------------------------------------------
We're happy to let you know that if you own Prophecies and have activated a Factions Pre-order on your account, you will be able to access your two new character slots during the Factions Head Start Event. The slots will become available and will have access to Cantha from 12:01 a.m. PDT (7:01 GMT) on Thursday, April 27th through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 28th (6:59 GMT on April 29th). After the close of the Head Start Event, Canthan characters and Factions content will not be accessible until a retail key is activated on the account. The character slots will enjoy a "grace period" of ten days, to allow you to enter your retail access key and make them permanent.
---------------------------------------------------

I think it means you can play for 10 days on your pre-order. But please do not kill me if it is not the case.

@Paragon, the Factions pre-order (delayed in SA) contains an access key, which u can link to your current GW account (or keep it seperate, i.e. standalone install). This will allow you to play Factions immediately.

There are even specific preferred ANet retailers that on the moment of pre-order taking place, will supply you with a "beta-access" key which will give you immediate access to Factions, and you can start playing already while you wait for the physical copy to arrive. Think the grace period for this beta key is 10 days, till u get your retail version in the mail.

There is also a purely online version which they will make available to purchase, also giving you immediate access, but you do not get the game in-a-box.

The preview event was open to anyone who had a GW account.

There sure is some confusion regarding the pre-orders for Factions. They should just have made the offers more simple, instead of "if you want this, then this, with that, but only when this..."-scenario taking place at the moment ...
The fact that we are in SA is also not helping, we seem to be the last to be considered, lowest priority, but then again we are used to it by now ...
or not

thanx all

so i'll have to wait for my copy to arrive.no credit card for online purches :(

looking forward to factions though (when it finally arives) :D

Heh Paragon, i'll be on briefly when these updates are done and then only probs much l8er, going for a drink @ about 9pm.

lol

cool. perhaps i'll c u then. promissed a friend i'd join him for some bf2 tonight but as soon as i'm done there its off to GW :p

The latest I heard is that you can not play for the 10 days on the pre-order. I will therefore also start playing whenever my CE arrives.
