@Vercogen, During the early stages of the game I recommend going Blood/Curses and a few attribute points in Soul Reaping for Energy Management. As more skills become available to you I recommend going "Minion Master". This is a build with most points in Death Magic and Soul Reaping, and since your a secondary Ranger, some points in Wilderness Survivial. What this build consists of is raising an army of undead minions and keeping them alive for as long as possible, much like the Necro in Diablo 2.
Im sure gkm will tell you that there is nothing more awesome than the brute overwhelming power of a Minion Master

Signets are spells and skills that can be cast without using energy of some kind. A signet is a bit like using a ring etc. to cast spells in D&D games.
Hexes are spells that makes enemies unhappy. Their damage is usually indirectly, but some also have a health degeneration effect.

tks gkm. will Backfire work on a signet spell then or not? since there is no energy involved....
by the way my current use for Shatter Delusions is to cast it just after Backfire kicks in at the target, followed by Phantasm for the kill.

I do not think backfire works for signets and Adrenaline based skills, but I am not 100% sure. Backfire can often work multiple times if the enemy for example casts flare or something like that. But if you can get the timing right, then it is good to use, I would guess. Have not been able to master it myself.
Backfire hurts a lot, but do not see it as the final word on killing casters.
@gkm - yeah, for caster killing better skills will come around like Spirit Shackles, etc.
@Vec - is there a mod that one can add that gives energy to a staff? for starters your current staff looks hard to beat but i think you need to hunt for mods to add to it.

My wife has one. It is probably the top necro staff at the moment.
So, your staff looks pretty good and will be hard to improve on with a random drop. There are some good ones available from collectors as well later in the game that nearly matches Kole's.
