Info on Guild Wars

I have been following this game for a while now and am REALLY excited about it, so I thought I would post some information for those who do not know much about it.

Guild wars is an online RPG game, which will be released on 28 April 2005. There will be no monthly fees whatsoever once you have purchased the game. The graphics are really stunning and apparently from what I have read the game is incredible.

Their are single missions, you can join up with other players and quest together or you can join/create a guild. Whenever you venture out into the world you get your own copy of that map, which stops player killing and camp killing. You also do not have to play for hundreds of hours to become powerful, since you can only reach a max level of 20, which means that there will not be level 2000 characters slaughtering you all the time, instead it will be based on skill. For this release there will only be 6 characters, but more are sure to come.

Also the streaming technology is amazing and they say that international players on 56K can play just fine. It also downloads updates and patches in the background while you play, so you never have to manually upgrade the game.

There will also be expansion packs available for purchase later down the line.

This game really does look amazing and should blow WOW outta the water. For more information on the game you can follow a few links below.

Interested to see how they will manage to maintain these servers without a monthly sub. WoW has already had several server issue, just not keeping up with demand I suppose. Wonder what business model they have based this on? Just can't see it being financially viable.

Agreed, I've also been following this game for some time. It's a pretty bold venture, I really hope it pays off for them.

Well, in reponse to the how will they maintain the servers question... Every 6 months they will be releasing a new chapter with additional Professions (classes) and missions, maps, etc. These add-on packs will be sold, and thus keep money flowing in for the upkeep of the servers. Just to note, if you don't want to buy the additional chapters, you will still be able to keep playing for free.

As far as I can tell, people will be wondering wtf they were even playing WoW. The only problem is that Guild Wars hasn't set a date for international release, which is why im pre-ordering from the U.S. Will keep you guys posted as soon as I get my hands on it.

That I doubt, Blizzard have always had superb marketing and have continuously released products that the public have raved about. WC, Diablo, SC etc etc. Let's wait and see what happens, WoW has already exceeded 1 million subscribers, when Guild Wars reaches that figure then that statement will hold water.

The game has already sold over 500 000 preorder copies, so I doubt a million is very far off.

I still highly doubt this to be as GREAT as WOW, look at anarchy online, using same business model - Buy game and pay for upgrades, its not doing nearly as well as WOW.

Its all about who runs the show, Blizzard = masters, in this area.

Ill definitely give the game a try, but I dont expect much on the long run.

I dunno. It's a really intersting take on the whole online gaming thing. It's really nothing like Anarchy Online, or any other MMORPG for that matter. I am starting to get a good idea of how they are going to do this and I think it has huge potential. One of the things I have always hated about MMORPG is that nothing changes. In GW, things change. There is a huge change in the game world for you at about level 6. As in the story actually progresses and everything is affected. And it's linked to you'r character. It's very much like the chapters in Diablo. And you don't simply move into a new area. As I understand it, the expansions (every 4-6 months) will continue to progress the storyline, with real changes occuring. And in two years time, you will be able to start a new character, and follow the entire story path. So their idea is, that if you want to continue the story, you will have to buy each new expansion. If you don't, the story does not progress for you.

WoW is also doing really well based on the already hugely popular Warcraft name and not because they are masters of MMORPG. If anyone is, SOE is. If the exact same game had been produced by anyone else, and called World of Blix, it wouldn't have half the subscribers. Still a great game though.

I love WoW, yes the Warcraft name might attributed to me actually buying the game, but it the end it's the content that brings me back to it, like a heroine addict.

Maybe these are my views because I'm currently lvl 34 and my character is still evolving every level. BUT.

My only concern is their lvl cap. So what happens you reach lvl 60 and have 300 in all skills? It seems all that is left to do is raid cities and fight PvP's. You gain no more experience, no more talent points and no more skills.

Now GW has a cap of lvl 20? How long does it take for you to get to your next level? How does your character evolve? I rate it would be pretty boring if you are stuck on 1 level with no new skills to "upgrade" for a whole month.

Can't compare WoW and AO. AO came out like 4-5 years ago (2001 i believe). At the time MMORPGs were nowhere near as commercial as now, so less fanfare. There's still the fact that AO and WoW are in totally different genres. AO is sci-fi [at the time can consider it a niche market] which had to compete against Everquest and Ultima Online. We all know Fantasy MMORPGs have always been more popular.

Of course today it's a different story, AO basic is free [both game + no subscription]. Then you pay a single price and get -all- the expansions one shot with a monthly subscription.

WoW came out less than 6 month ago. If WoW is still going in 2010 , then we can talk again how successful it really is :P

Are they only gonna make money by selling the add ons? What if the subscribers get peeved before the first expansion?

Mebe they can use product placement, and ingame advertisements! Erm, it could be nice i suppose...
