Today, Google notified me that my Gumtree account had been compromised.

Not an uncommon occurrence for a South African nowadays but it's a large website so I was intrigued. I did a quick Google and found very little about it except the below X post in February 2024.

Does anyone know if this has been verified? Seems to not have gathered much attention, is why I ask.

There has been a huge data leak in South Africa. Google suddenly notified me that a number of my passwords have been compromised. But, Google did not identify the source of the leak. Although I use the same passwords for certain sites, I do use 2FA as well.

And for what its worth, I do not have a Gumtree account.

Probably not the South African one.

Tweets can be long these days. Near the end. But I'm not sure how the other countries are all linked. Seems pretty separate. A few things don't add up. Hence I'm not running for my pitchfork just yet.
