I know i know...its my own fault at the end of the day. + one only researches these scams once it happens to you. So its too late now. But ive learned me lesson. Just thought that getting an official sms from fnb meant the money was in my account. And it was, just not cleared... Im sharing my experience to hopefully save others the trouble.

the reality is that deaing with cash can be a pain in the read. Not to mention the fees.
Im happy to receive an EFT, as long as the person does it right there in front of me, on my laptop with me watching standing behind him, watching his screen. If the oke says no he doesnt want me to see his banking page I close my laptop lid and walk away...

When I sold my S4 I got a call from a Nigerian oke who said he would send his driver. I smelt a rat, so when asked what bank I was I told him Nedbank. He said he was Standard Bank (which I actually am too) and that it would take 24 hours to clear but that he would send R500 cash as a good faith gesture, and the payment slip printed.
I told him that Im actually Standard Bank, that it would reflect right away...

did he go deposit a cheque in front of you after he called his "friend" to say he was happy???
No i never met the first guy I dealt with. I met his friend, he checked the goods. I called the first guy to say that his friend was happy, i handed my phone to the guy so they could speak, they confirmed all was in order. I then got an sms 5 mins later, from fnb, that the cash was deposited in my account. I checked the sms several times for any thing that looked suspicious..it was an official sms from fnb, so I gave over my goods..
The bank then investigated and phoned the branch at where the deposit was made, and told me that he deposited an empty cheque but entered my details in the ATM - making me get the official sms from fnb
When I sold my PSP on gumtree, I explicitly said "No Nigerians. No scammers. If your name is Odingwe, I'm not interested."
Didn't have a single scamster call or sms. Was a bit sad.
That's a pity. But imagine Boetie van die plaas - he's super excited about the new 400BHP tractor mower he saw in Farmer's Weekly, but can't afford the new price. He hops on to www.boermaakaplan.co.za and finds a proper listing for a decent, second-hand Jumpstart 8000 400BHP Super Mower, and sends a text reading: "Hallo. your msg of machine on the website of boermaakaplan is lekker. hoe much and can make deposit on when date?"
Boetie's gonna have a bad time.

Well unfortunately lesson learnt by you.
But I would have walked away the minute his "friend" showed up. If someone wants to buy something from me, they can come in person.
