Gun Laws in NZ vs SA

So I was mucking around online and I came across this.

It seems that in New Zealand of all places one is able to own many different types of firearms. Even the mount watering Ak47... What you would do with an AK47 in NZ i cant even begin to guess.

This got me wondering, how can the people of NZ be allowed to own these types of weapons and us in South Africa... the most dangerous place in the world are not allowed to. It boils my blood knowing that if i was in NZ i could have various types of weapons. The AK47, MP5, USP, D.Eagle, glock the list goes on an on.

A well armed populous is the best defense against tyranny...
 
The ANC's worried too many of their voters'll be killed if people had access to weapons like that there.

Except in New Zealand there are no tyrants? NZ has been named the less corrupt country in the world, along with Sweden.

Oh i know that. But the point is... that not allowing us to arm and protect our selves we are unable to fight the powers that be, should the decide to turn on us.

Unfortunately it is those that want a gun to defend themselves that are hurt most. These b******s will find illegal firearms in any way necessary to attack you; the law doesn't encompass that.

Not allowing? Have you been turned down for a firearms license?

Personally I have no problem requiring firearms users to prove their competency before allowing them to possess one.

In principle, I'm against guns but acknowledge that violent crime in SA does not discriminate when it comes to victims. In any civilised society there's definitely no need for semi-automatic weapons. The argument can probably be made for people in outlying areas, like farms, but explain to me what's the use of an AK47 in a fully built-up area? You're better off, if you're going the run route, with a small pistol.
 
It would seem that in most Western countries a collector can legally own almost any gun that you'd like. I've always wanted one of these:

It is the German MG-42 machine gun from WWII. It was arguably the most feared hand weapon of the war. In fact, the US Army got a huge skrik when they first encountered these in Normandy and they actually made a training movie to prepare their troops for facing this fearsome weapon. Apparently some troops just surrendered when they first heard this thing. The MG-42 is still being produced today in many countries. IIRC the Germans are still using an updated version to this day.

There are many private gun collectors worldwide that own MG-42s. They say that the biggest drawback to shooting this weapon is the insane amount of ammo that one can expend in a very short time. In South Africa my chances of obtaining one of these is smaller than my changes of falling pregnant, though. Come to think of it, there's that dude in the US that fell pregnant recently. Maybe there's still hope for my MG-42, then...

I wasn't sure of my facts so I first checked the web: The first US intelligence report about the MG42 was released in March 1943. That means that it didn't go to North Africa. It is possible that it was used in Italy but the Yanks might well have first faced it on the Normandy beaches.

Like I said before, that's besides the point, though.

While I'm on a roll here's some more info about that gun from a British peacekeeper that was on the receiving end of an MG42 in Bosnia:

The MG42 is without doubt one (if not THE) best LMG's ever built.
The M60 has a lot of it's construction/functions BASED on the '42 but the MG42 is a true thoroughbred!

The German army (along with others) still use the MG42 but in 7.62MM calibur (It's now designated the MG3). the only difference being the barrel bore, flash eliminator and feed tray (depending if you're using disintergrating link belts or non). I have examples of both here by the side of me (I have a soft spot for them). Whilst serving in Bosnia we came under-fire for (what turned out to be a couple of MG42's) and were given suppressive fire support from a German unit the other side of the valley who were using.........you guessed it - MG3's!
Kind of the ultimate EVEN match!

Having been on the receiving end of one.................I can truly say they are (with the possible exception of the GPMG) the ultimate Light machine gun!

Depends. For self-defence, usually a small pistol is optimal. For doing your civil duty in times when the enemy might be the government, no, then there is absolutely a reason that you should be armed to the teeth.

I've seen estimates of number of people killed by their own governments in the last century ranging from about 50,000,000 upwards.

Actually what's wrong with a semi-automatic weapon for self-defence?
 
If criminals can have AK47s I should be allowed to have one also, let it be a fair fight.
