GWI to Sa Wireless, your views please

and its pretty frikken interesting that you were asking our advice of how we got our things to work, any way i will always say, a wisp is a wisp is a wisp you are all the same and you will all perish.

what did the one grey area say to the other?

Sorry Dominic... being a person of Law I though you could be a bit more carefull on comments and giving out free opinions. (which are yet to be backed up)

Do you work for WAPA ? If yes, Please substantiate your comments and not take wild stabs in the dark about the legality. in Black and White , on paper. If you in-fact DO work for WAPA, you opinion is hardly unbiased. :D

hello again

1st point or order: being a person of law i tend to have a number of clients which in no way implies their views as being mine, be it providing regulatory advice to ispa/wapa/whoever (if it did i would be highly contradicted internally) - a lawyer representing a murder accused etc etc...i am however very strongly biased towards universal access and service, affordable telecoms and fair market competition

2nd point of order: i am not a person of law 24hrs a day and see no reason why i cannot behave like all the other people on the forum i.e. as a person and not a lawyer/marketing exec/etc etc

3rd point of order: you have the advantage of me as i have no idea what you do or why you feel quite as strongly as you clearly do

& 4: who i do work for is none of your or anyone else's business

they are currently both grey areas - there is no consensus or clarity or meaningful guidance from icasa - live with it

now be nice and stop pissing on my spark plugs

Not until you stop offering misleading nuggets of information... or until a president is set on the matter. :D

Legislation exists, and IMHO, the only people that "Interpret" the law are the ones that are guilty and want to Get away with reading the legislation in such a way the author never intended.

Its either Legal or Illegal, there is no such thing as a "Half Truth"

Oh please. He is entitled to his own opinion just as much as the next person whether he is a lawyer or not. He doesnt have to qualify squat to anyone. Personally, i think the whole thing is one big grey area hidden amongst a flock of grey areas congregating on a large vacant grey area in search of grey area's to feed upon. I reckon a trained chimpanzee hyped up on speed in the MIDST of an epileptic fit could write better legislation than what we currently have. Further more, i believe the ISM bands should be used for strictly NON PROFIT purposes. Just to clarify, i need no justification for these opinions and offer no presidents because Hell... its my opinion :)

...and that's your interpretation (and your legal knowledge is summed up by president)

"misleading" - i.e. i have an agenda and am trying to mislead the forum as to the true position.....you need to perhaps think that one through a little

adios

The problem is YOU.YOU are the people that are making RF noise everywhere.

Jawug
PWP
And so on

What Mr. Sawirless is trying to tell us, is:

1. WISPs dont cause any noise.
2. WISPs dont use amped omni's.
3. WISPS are outnumbered 1 to 20 000 by WUG's.
4. WISPS are the innocent victims of the enormous WUG empire in SA.

We can conclude that:

1. Wuggers are the ones using omni's "everywhere"
2. Wuggers are responsible for the noise "everywhere"
3. Wuggers are everywhere, and they're evil.

Hi all,

Just seen this thread, and I also note that Rikus who started it has been banned from these forums - I wouldn't be surprised if he were banned from many more...

Our 'arrogance' was really just insisting that there was no problem with his connection, as every time he called our helpdesk, his connection was glowing bright red & pumping to the max.

We never saw a problem in action, but he always insisted it was slow. No amount of usage stats, graphs & details would convince him otherwise.

Hope he gets a satisfactory service from SA wireless, with whom we have an amicable relationship and reasonably regularly refer each other clients who we can't service.

As far as the rest of the comments go, I'll sit back and watch the rest of you slug it out. I try & regulate our networks to 'behave' and use only low-power radios and sector antennas - in very isolated cases we use 200mW devices, and these days omnis only get used in low RF density and low usage areas...

I guess best summed up by:
they are currently both grey areas - there is no consensus or clarity or meaningful guidance from icasa - live with it

Hmmn those Wisps that charge for a service seem to get alot of complaints .
The community Wugs which dont charge never have any complaints against them, just unfounded finger pointing.

just my observation

Here is my take on Global Web Intact (GWI).

Here is my take on Global Web Intact (GWI).
Like most users here I wanted to give telscum and their partner in crime, our wonderful communications minister, Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburi, the finger.
So I ring up GWI to come do a signal test, the next day they come out, test my signal and I quote “you have a very good signal here”. Hmm the force is strong with this one I’m thinking. The following day they come to install (fast service, I like) only to inform me I need the bigger grid which will be an additional R500 because my signal is too poor to use the standard grid. Hmm…

Ok R500 later I’m up and running and very happy with my brand spanking new 128kb connection. Much better then my smelly old 56k modem, or at least it was that way for 2 weeks. In the two weeks that I had my connection I told 5 people of GWI and one of them signed up immediately. The lady in question lives about 5k’s from me. She has the exact same package as I do but only with the standard grid. Her DOWNLOAD rate is 200kbs to 115kbs, please note this is on a 128kb connection. Fantastic. My connection on the other hand maxes out at 15kbs. Pages take FOR EVER to load. Forget about playing games online or using torrents cause everyone is using the same IP and all ports are blocked (btw they put a password on your router so you cant open up ports on your router either, not that it would have helped you anyway).

The torrent thing I can understand, it is an uncapped service, bandwidth is expensive (or so we are led to believe) and if you allow torrents people will download all kinds of crap slowing down the whole network. But why, in the name of all that is good do they even bother giving a tech support number if the guy is going to tell you to check if your cable is plugged in? Or he tells you to ping google and when he sees that its pinging says your connection is fine when in fact YOU CANT OPEN ONE DAMN PAGE?! Sure it pings, but did I mention all the packets lost?

There are 2 guys at tech support that know what they are doing and have been helpful IF I was lucky enough to get one of them on the line and I feel for them, its not a nice job having people bitch and moan at you all day and you have to sort out their crap. But I have given up trying to phone tech support because lately they either just don’t pick up or I get put through to Mr. IsYourLinePluggedInPleasePingGoogle at which point my ulcer starts bleeding again and I need to go change my adult diaper. Oh and btw I’m still waiting for someone to call me back after I phoned for the 5th time asking them to check what is going on with my connection cause it takes 5 minutes to load google, IF it loads at all and I cant connect to my own website www.truesouthafrica.co.nr which I created using GWI in the 1st 2 weeks I had it. Surprisingly enough EVERY body else can go there, accept me.

Another friend of mine signed up with another WISP and his connection is FAST, it’s a 512 uncapped line with a constant download rate of 60kbs for the same price as my supposedly 128. So I will be moving on over to them ASAP.

In short, if you want to check email and surf for 24hours uncapped GWI is for you. On the other hand if you’re like me and want to play games online, have work that needs to be uploaded and downloaded, give them a miss.
